Thursday
Weather
The ups and downs of Wednesday were very well-timed, with the murky weather clearing off around breakfast time and not returning until around dinner time. It looks as though there will be further ups and downs, but once again, the timing should result in a mostly pleasant day. The morning will start with rain, drizzle, mist and hill fog. Then, towards lunchtime, when the wind changes from a moderate S’ly to a W’ly, it should become dry with good visibility. Then the afternoon will be rather cloudy but bright, and there probably won’t be any further rain until we get a few spots in the night time. Max temp around 10°C, min temp around 6°C.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be super-clean in the morning, but only 1-3 feet. Then it will turn choppy in the afternoon and pick up to 4-5 feet by dusk. If you’re swimming then the north and west will be best in the morning, but be aware that the tidal currents will be strong. Then, in the afternoon, the south and east will offer you the smoothest conditions. High water will be about 9.7m at 7:05am. Low water will be about 0.7m at 1:34pm.
Friday
Weather
Apart from a slim chance of the odd light shower in the morning and then again in the night time, we are simply looking at a partly sunny day and a partly clear night. The moderate NW’ly breeze brining slightly cooler air to the islands, meaning that we have a max of just 9°C and a min of 5°C with the chance of a ground frost. Head to the south coast to feel warmest.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 6-8 foot waves on the west coast, but there should be some lovely clean 3-4 footers on the south coast if you fancy something different. As for the swimming, the east coast will be best for that, so you can shelter from both wind and swell. High water will be about 9.8m at 7:45am (some very big splashes out west). Low water will be about 0.6m at 2:12pm.
The Weekend
Weather
Both days will have a chance of the odd light shower, but they should be mostly if not entirely dry. The skies will be a mix of cloud and sunshine, with Saturday leaning a bit more toward the cloudy scenario and Sunday leaning a bit more towards the sunshine. As for the winds, they will be moderate NNE’ly on Saturday, veering ENE’ly on Sunday. This means once again that the south coast will be the most comfortable area on Saturday, but some west-coast areas will feel nicer on Sunday. Max temps 9°C, min temps 4-5°C with the chance of ground frost.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be 3-4 feet and a bit choppy on Saturday, then increasingly clean on Sunday. As for the swimming, the south will generally be best, but Sunday will also be nice and smooth in the northern corners of the west-coast bays. High tides will be at breakfast time, 9.7m on Saturday then 9.4m on Sunday. Low tides will be mid-afternoon.
Next Week
Weather
The weather looks dry and mostly sunny until late Wednesday, although there will be a fairly stiff SSE’ly wind (especially on Wednesday), making the 10-11°C max temps feel as if they are colder than that. From Wednesday night onward, the wind will stay fresh to strong, alternating between S’ly and W’ly, as a series of weather fronts cross the islands, bringing episodes of rain, punctuated by dry and bright interludes. Max temps on Thursday and Friday will probably be around 12°C and the nightly minima will probably be around 8°C.
Surf and the Water
Surfable waves every day of the week; nice and clean Monday to Wednesday, then a bit choppier Thursday and Friday; mostly small to medium in size, but probably getting quite chunky at times. The tidal range will be medium large at the start of the week, dropping off to very small by the end of the week. The times of high water shuffling forward each day, from roughly 9am on Monday to roughly midday on Friday.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
