Wednesday and Thursday
Weather
Tuesday’s air was inherently mild, so when the sunshine broke through in the early afternoon, it really cooked up some heat. The sunshine will be brighter and a bit more plentiful on both Wednesday and Thursday, but the air will be a little cooler to begin with, so it’s only likely to take the daily temperatures up to 14 or 15°C in most parts. If anywhere’s going to hit sweet 16 again, then it will be St Peter Port, partly due to urban effect and partly due to its shelter from the force 3 W’ly breeze. As for the weather, no rain is expected but there will certainly be some cloud to break up the sunshine from time to time. During the mornings and the nights, that cloud will be on the low side, meaning that the westward slopes and the higher Parishes are highly likely to see some mist and maybe even some fog patches.
Surf and the Water
The waves of the last few days have faded away, but there are still some lovely conditions for swimming and paddle-boarding. Pretty much on any coast in the first half of each day, but certainly better on the east coast during the second half. High water will be in the mid-mornings and low tide will be in the mid-late afternoons.
Friday and Saturday
Weather
Friday is looking like a cloudy day, probably making it a degree cooler than the previous two. During the morning, that cloud is likely to be low enough to give a little mist or fog on the western slopes and higher parishes. Then, after a few sunny breaks in the afternoon, we will probably see thicker cloud in the evening, with maybe a few showers as we move through the night. There’s a small chance of that weather coming a bit late and putting a bit of a blight on Saturday morning. However, the most likely scenario is that it will be a straight-forward sunny day on Saturday, and maybe the warmest of this week… the winds switching from Friday’s force 3-4 W’ly to Saturday’s force 2-3 N’ly.
Surf and the Water
You can pretty much forget the surf on Friday because it will only be 1 foot and choppy. However, this will be the start of a very small swell that should be surfable on Saturday, when it should be 2 feet and a little bit cleaner. As for the smoothest swimming conditions, they will be found on the east coast on Friday and on the south coast on Saturday. High tides in the late mornings. Low tides in the late afternoons.
Sunday and Liberation Day
Weather
Perhaps a few cloudy spells here and there, mainly in the early mornings, but these two days are basically looking dry, sunny and increasingly warm, likely 16°C for Sunday’s max and then 17°C for Liberation Day. Winds will come from somewhere between the northeast and the east… if we get lucky and those winds come straight out of the east then we could probably add a degree (or maybe two) to those expected max temps. Don’t forget your sun-cream (UV index likely peaking at 6 between midday and 2pm).
Surf and the Water
The high tides will be around lunchtime (nice and small so plenty of sand left on the beaches), and the low tides will be around dawn and dinner-time. As for the surf, it will be much cleaner than the previous two days… most likely still 2 feet on Sunday, but dropping back to a barely rideable 1 foot on Monday.
The Rest of Next Week
Weather
After such a dry April, gardeners and farmers are hanging out for some rain, but I’m afraid it doesn’t look as though we will be treated to so much as a drop. However, for all you heat and sunshine lovers, it’s looking like a winner of a week, with high pressure settling over Southern Britain or the Channel and max temperatures rising by about half a degree per day.
Surf and the Water
The surf is looking very small or perhaps flat on Tuesday, but there is a good signal for some 2-3 foot waves to build on Wednesday and perhaps hold through the rest of the week. It’s still a long way off though, so there is obviously a lot of uncertainty that comes with that optimism. The tidal rang will stay nice and small on Tuesday and Wednesday, then increase to medium-sized on Thursday and Friday (lows in the mornings, highs in the afternoons).
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
