Thursday
Weather
High pressure will be centred over the Channel Islands, giving us a very light and variable airflow. Given that we will probably have had some heavy showers the night before, then it will be very easy for some mist or shallow fog to form under the cool clear skies around dawn. This should soon burn off as the sun begins to blaze through the morning though. Then, during the afternoon, skies will be a little cloudier, but it should still feel really pleasant with barely a breath of wind to disturb us. Max temp around 18°C in most areas, but maybe 19°C in Town.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be 3-4 feet and pretty clean. As for the tides, we will have another big high (roughly 9m) at 9:38am, and another big low at 3:56pm. Great swimming all around the islands, but probably nicest of all along the east coast at breakfast time.
Friday
Weather
Although imperceptibly light, Thursday’s breeze will have been bringing air from a WNW’ly direction. On Friday, the direction will remain the same but the strength of the wind will increase from light force 3 in the morning, to moderate force 4 in the afternoon and perhaps even fresh force 5 in the evening. Temperatures will be much the same as on Thursday (max 18-19°C) but this extra wind will give it a much chillier feeling, especially compared to the very warm weather in the first half of the week. Definitely best to head to the east coast to find good shelter and to enjoy the plentiful sunshine. The only rain that’s expected is a light shower or two around breakfast time. Very little impact on the day as a whole, but maybe worth taking a jacket on your morning commute.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be about 3-4 feet again but not quite so clean (in fact rather messy in the evening). As for the tides, we will have a slightly smaller high (roughly 8.5m) at 10:25am, and then low water will be at 4:41pm. The best swimming conditions will definitely be along the east coast, especially around Bordeaux mid-morning.
The Weekend
Weather
After Friday’s perky winds, it will be lovely for them to fall nice and light again, making all parts of the islands lovely and comfortable in the partial sunshine. Saturday’s wind will just be a light force 2 SW’ly, then it will veer N’ly on Sunday morning before increasing force 3-4 in the afternoon. With that increase in wind, we might also see a slight deterioration in the weather as some showers are expected to develop. However it’s not likely that they will become heavy until after dusk. Max temps will most likely be 18-19°C on both Saturday and Sunday.
Surf and the Water
Mostly clean waves along the west coast for surfers, just a little bit choppy through the second half of Sunday. Wave size… 3 feet on Saturday, then 1-2 feet on Sunday. Staying lovely and smooth for swimmers along most coasts for the majority of the time, but it would probably be best to head east, when the wind is a little stronger on Sunday afternoon/evening. The tidal range will be smaller again, with the highs towards midday now, roughly 8m and 7.5m respectively.
Next Week
Weather
A Westerly airflow looks set to bring sunshine and showers every day of the week. Temperatures around average for late May, peaking around 17-18°C every day but sometimes feeling warmer because the wind will just be light force 3, and sometimes feeling cooler because the wind picks up to fresh force 5 (probably Tuesday and Wednesday). Daily details will be clearer nearer the time.
Surf and the Water
The surf will likely be 2 feet and relatively clean Monday, then 3 feet and choppy on Tuesday and Wednesday, improving to 3 feet and clean on Thursday and Friday. Most of the time, the winds will be light enough that the swimming conditions will be smooth all around the islands, but it does look as though you might want to seek some east-coast shelter on Wednesday. Small to medium sized tides, with highs of roughly 7.5m in the first half of the week, picking up thoroughly 8m in the second.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
