Wednesday
Weather
I know Tuesday morning delivered quite a lot more in the way of drizzly showers than predicted. However, Wednesday will have some slightly different characteristics… cooler air and stronger winds. This should all result in the clouds being a bit higher and more bubbly… the kind of clouds that deliver brief sparsely-scattered showers, which consist of proper raindrops rather than that fuzzy drizzle that we saw on Tuesday. In between those shower clouds, there will be vast stretches of blue sky and sunshine, taking us to a max temp of between 16-18°C, depending on your location. Winds will be force 4-5 W’ly, so Town and the Fermain area will be the most sheltered and comfortable locations.
Surf and the Water
A small tidal range, with low water at breakfast time and dinner time, and with high water at 1:38pm (6.9m). The best swimming conditions will certainly be on the east coast (especially lunchtime at Fermain). Out west, the surf will be messy but 4-5 feet, very rideable and probably quite fun.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
The only bit of rain will be a brief drizzly spell towards the end of Thursday night and the beginning of Friday morning (possibly with some mist and hill-fog at that time). Otherwise, we are looking at two days of dryness and partial sunshine (the bulk of the sunshine being in the afternoons), with the moderate SW’ly winds bringing pleasant but unremarkable temperatures. The daily maxima will range from 17-19°C, depending on your precise location (Town always being the warmest spot).
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf should be reasonably clean on both days, 3-4 feet for the majority of the time, but jumping quite dramatically to over 6 feet on Friday late afternoon/evening. The tides will still be small in the grand scheme of things, but they will be bigger than they were through the first half of the week, so it will be a bit harder to find good surf spots around the early morning and late evening lows. The afternoons will really offer the best surfing opportunities. As for the swimming, the north and east coasts will really have the smoothest conditions for that, especially mid-afternoon when the tide is highest.
The Weekend
Weather
A fine and dry weekend, with temperatures staying around average (or just a tiny bit higher). The winds will be quite a bit lighter than the previous days (SW’ly on Saturday and NW’ly on Sunday), so it should feel very comfortable, but obviously not if you have sunburn to contend with (UV index of 7), so don’t forget to take your hats and sun-cream whenever you are out and about between roughly 10am and 4pm.
Surf and the Water
Plenty of surf again… 5 feet on Saturday and 4 feet on Sunday. The wind will be onshore but it won’t be strong enough to mess things up, so there should be plenty of big smiles all round, especially due to the sunshine and the feeling of flexibility (winter suits and accessories really haven’t been necessary for a month or two now). As for the swimming conditions, the will remain best along the east coast. And the tides… late morning lows of 2.4m (Sat) and 2m (Sun), late afternoon highs of 7.9m (Sat) and 8.4m (Sun).
Next Week
Weather
Apart from Monday’s very light N’ly, we it will generally be a week of light to moderate W’ly breezes (perhaps a little stronger than that on Thursday and Friday but that’s too far away to be confident about). This means that temperatures will stay around average for June (maxima in the high teens, but possibly tickling 20°C in Town on the calmest and sunniest days). Early indications suggest that Monday and Tuesday should be dry and mostly sunny, but there will probably be some daily showers, or perhaps some longer spells of rain from Wednesday onward.
Surf and the Water
I’m afraid that with the Azores high-pressure system bulging northwards, and Atlantic lows getting squished up beyond Iceland and into the Norwegian sea, the surf is going to dwindle away to almost nothing. That said, there will be a constant W’ly flow across the mid-Atlantic, which will probably maintain a weak 1-2 foot swell and possibly be enough for keen youngsters to keep their fires stoked. Swimming and paddle-boarding will generally be best along the east coast, but there will be moments of calm, when the other coasts become lovely and smooth as well. Biggish tides, with highs of around 8.5m on Monday, picking up to around 9m on Tuesday and carrying on in that range through the rest of the week.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
