Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 16 June 2022

Thursday

Weather

There will be a lot of high cloud, so the sunshine will be rather muted and very hazy. That won’t stop the temperature from climbing to dizzy heights though, as the gentle ENE’ly will keep wafting continental heat in our direction. The max is likely to be 24°C, which is about 3°C higher than Wednesday. UV index still very high (7 or 8) despite the cloudier skies, so you will need your sun cream as well as your drinking water.

Surf and the Water

Clean 2 foot surf for the most part, maybe the odd 3 footer first thing in the morning. Great swimming conditions too, with the water really not feeling too cold now, but suitably refreshing when you need some respite from the heat of the day. Big tides… high water will be about 9.1m at 8:43am and 9.3m at 9:03pm. Low water will be at 3:04pm (a great one for Lihou Island or for the sandy south-coast beaches).

Friday

Weather

With a full day of sunshine this will probably be the peak of the heat, because the gentle breeze will veer to a SSE’ly direction, meaning that the continental heat will be even less tempered by the coolness of the Channel. We could see a top temp of 30°C but it’s more likely to top out somewhere between 27 and 29°C. If you are out and about then, swimming in the sea will be one of the nicest ways to deal with the heat (you will need lots of sun cream and drinking water though). If you are going to stay indoors, then don’t forget that opening the windows on days like this will actually heat your house up rather than cooling it down. If you don’t have air con then the best you can do is to close both the windows and the curtains/blinds.

Surf and the Water

The surf will still be gorgeously clean, but it will only be 1 foot for the most part, with just the odd 2 footer first thing in the morning. The swimming conditions will be lovely and smooth, just what you need on such a scorcher of a day. Big tides again… high water will be about 9m at 9:43am and 9.1m at 9:57pm. Low water will be at 3:52pm.

The Weekend

Weather

After a very sweaty Friday night, Saturday morning will feel almost as cooking as Friday. However, as the day progresses, there will be an increase in both cloud and the NE’ly wind (force 5-6 by the night time). That won’t cause things to cool down quickly though, it will just stop us from reaching the same heights as Friday. I think the general feeling will be that we need a thoroughly good downpour or even a thunderstorm to clear the air. Well that’s exactly what we expect to happen, on-and-off, from late evening Saturday through until late morning Sunday. Rainfall quantities could be anything from 3mm-30mm, but a healthy 5-10mm is what’s most likely. Then though the rest of Sunday, it should be dry and bright, with the wind veering E’ly and likely reducing from force 5-6, down to a more comfortable force 3-4. Saturday max temp 23-24°C, Sunday max temp 20-21°C.

Surf and the Water

The surf will get rather messy through Saturday, but it will clean up again on Sunday. Still only 1-2 feet though, so nothing to get excited about. As for the tides, they will be roughly 8.8m mid-morning Saturday, and 8.4m mid-morning Sunday. Those will probably be the best times for swimmers to find a little shelter (south coast on Saturday and west coast on Sunday).

Next Week

Weather

With light or moderate ENE’ly breezes for the most part, it certainly isn’t going to be cold, but neither is it going to be stifling on this occasion. We are probably looking at daily max temps in the low twenties. Monday night and Tuesday night bring the likelihood of further showers, possibly thundery, but the rest of the week is looking largely, if not entirely, dry.

Surf and the Water

There might be the odd pulse of 1-2 foot surf but the majority of the week is looking flat, thanks to a massive high pressure system that seems to be taking over the Atlantic. Swimming conditions will generally be best along the west coast or the south coast, especially around high tide (lunchtime Monday and Tuesday, then mid-afternoon from Wednesday to Friday).

The next forecast update will be on Saturday morning…
