Sunday
Weather
Some high cloud in the morning, making the sunshine a little muted. However, the afternoon will be straight forward blue sky and brilliant sunshine, taking the temperature right up to a sticky max of 31°C around 5 or 6pm. The winds… force 3-4 SE’ly in the morning, veering E’ly in the afternoon. Those who love it hot will be loving the west coast beaches (just don’t forget your sun protection and drinking water). Those who aren’t so keen on the heat will find the east coast slightly more to their liking. The night time will be pretty challenging, as the temperature will stay in the twenties for a long time, only dropping to the 21°C minimum around dawn Monday.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be near flat, maybe a clean ripple for very large boards, but probably not worth the effort in such heat. A much better effort/reward ratio if you just go for a swim… the west coast being smoothest due to the offshore breeze, but the east coast being a little more refreshing due to the onshore breeze. High water will be about 9m just after 10am. Low water will be around 4:30pm.
Monday
Weather
Record breaking heat is expected. Pure sunshine and a steady feed hot continental air on a force 3-4 ESE’ly wind. 35°C or maybe even 36°C is expected to be the max, which means that we should beat the 34.3°C from back in 2003. Very important to stay hydrated, and to keep your houses cool (most easily done by keeping doors, windows, blinds and curtains closed for the vast majority of the time). The absolute hottest time of day will be fairly late, between around 3pm and 7pm, and then there won’t be much respite overnight I’m afraid, as the air will only drop to a minimum temperature of 22°C.
Surf and the Water
Perhaps a more reliable pulse of 1-2 foot surf in the afternoon and evening. However I certainly wouldn’t advise doing anything strenuous in the extreme heat. Once again, the main water activity for the day will simply be relaxed swimming and paddling in order to handle the less extreme heat before midday. However, sun protection and hydration will be essential. Better to stay at home and have a cold bath than to head out without drinking water and a decent sun hat. High water will be about 8.7m just before 11am. Low water will be around 5:15pm.
Tuesday
Weather
A sunny and hot start to Tuesday, with temperatures likely to return to the high 20s (probably around 27°C) pretty quickly. However, skies should turn cloudy late morning and then some showers (possibly thundery) should pass over the islands around lunchtime. At the same time, the wind will switch from a force 5 SE’ly to a force 4 SW’ly, probably ushering in some mist and fog banks. That’s when the temperature will really take a bit of a dive. We will see a mix of cloudiness, mistiness and brightness through the rest of the day, but temperatures will return to more comfortable values (low 20s). Further showers are also likely, most probably in the evening and overnight.
Surf and the Water
More clean 1-2 foot waves are likely, mainly in the morning. Sea mist is highly likely though, which would at least be a relief from the extreme heat. High water will be about 8.4m around 11:40am. Low water will be around 6pm.
Wednesday to Friday
Weather
Of these three days, Thursday stands out as the finest, with very light N’ly breezes, pure sunshine and a comfortable max temperature of around 22°C. Wednesday and Friday will both be windier… force 4-5 (WSW’ly on Wednesday and NE’ly on Friday), and the skies will be cloudy for quite a lot of the time, with the likelihood of a few showers, most likely during the mornings, and probably heaviest on Friday.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 1 foot surf on Wednesday and Friday, but probably some better quality 2-3 foot waves on Thursday. As for the swimming, that will be best out east on Wednesday, good on all coasts Thursday, then best on the south coast on Friday. Tides gradually shrinking, with highs around lunchtime. Those highs as small as 7m by Friday.
The next forecast update will be on Wednesday evening…
