Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 11 August 2022

Thursday

Weather

No change in the story of dry weather, hot sunshine and force 3 to 4 NE’ly breezes. The temperature continuing to rise, such that the afternoon max in most areas will be 27-28°C, but probably 29°C in the hottest southern spots. With very little else happening in the sky right now, don’t forget to take a look at the massive August moon tonight (98% full), that’s going to rise in our southeastern skies at (8:55pm), which is just 20 minutes after the sun sets in the northwest. (Minimum overnight temperature 18°C).

Surf and the Water

Flat surf but lovely smooth water on the south coast again. Low tide will be around lunchtime, high tides around breakfast time and in the evening (8.6 and 9.1m respectively).

Friday

Weather

Another smouldering day of flawless blue sky, sunshine and NE’ly breezes. Those breezes will be just a tad lighter than on Thursday though, so we can expect daytime temperatures to be a degree higher than on Thursday and it won’t be quite so easy to find a cooler area. This extra heat will carry though into the night time, with the temperature only falling to a very sticky minimum of 19 or 20°C. Once again, don’t forget to look out for that fantastic full moon (100% on this occasion), rising in our southeastern skies at (9:22pm), which is just 49 minutes after the sun sets in the northwest.

Surf and the Water

The surf isn’t going to be totally flat. There could be some infrequent surges from a very long period swell, but anything rideable will only be 1-2 feet and the wind-direction is not great for the west coast. Once again, however, we will have lovely smooth water, especially on the south coast. Low tide will be around lunchtime, high tides around breakfast time and shortly before dusk (9.1 and 9.6m respectively).

The Weekend

Weather

Still hot and mostly sunny on Saturday, with the temperature going a degree or two higher than on Friday as the breeze veers to a SE’ly direction (so probably exceeding the rare 30°C threshold). There will be quite a lot of high cloud in the sky though, which will thicken and lower on Sunday, leading to slightly lower temperatures on that day. Furthermore, the wind, although very light, will change to a S’ly direction by lunchtime and a W’ly direction by dusk. This will bring a chance of fog banks along the coasts, but perhaps the most significant change will be the likelihood of a good old downpour during the middle part of the day (possibly thundery).

Surf and the Water

Perhaps some 1 foot surf on Saturday but most likely flat on both days. As for the prize swimming conditions, this title will gradually shift from the long-reigning south coast, to the west coast through Saturday, and then to the north and east coasts through Sunday. Very big tides, with highs of around 9.5m around breakfast time and about 9.9m around dusk.

Next Week

Weather

The wind will be very light indeed, so it will never really play spoiler for anyone (except for the windsurfers and kite-surfers of course). However, because it will generally be wafting in from the west, it will have the significant effect of keeping our temperatures a bit closer to those of the sea water in the Channel and the Atlantic. We can therefore expect daily maxima in the low 20’s (but often mid 20’s in Town) and nightly minima in the mid-teens. There will be the further risk of a fog bank or two, affecting the windward coasts and perhaps drifting a little way inland. There will also be showers developing over France and wandering across the area nearly every day. Unfortunately, the vast majority of them will die out before they reach us. However, I will be surprised if we are unlucky enough to reach the end of the week without at least a] couple of them managing to sprinkle on our thirsty fields and gardens.

Surf and the Water

Perhaps some 1-2 foot surf at times, due to their being a very healthy low pressure system near Iceland, but most likely flat I’m afraid, due to the blocking effect of Southwest Britain. As for the swimming conditions, these will be lovely on all coasts for much of the time, due to the lightness of the wind. However, whenever there is any strength to the breeze, then it will definitely be best to head east for the smoothest water.

The next forecast update will be on Saturday evening or Sunday morning…
