Wednesday

Weather

Some bright skies are likely in the morning, but they will be tempered by the strong SSW’ly wind. Then we are in for a spell of rain at lunchtime, as the wind switches to a fresh W’ly. After that rain has cleared, the skies will remain mostly cloudy for a few hours, so we will only have solid sunshine for the last couple of daylight hours. Max temps will be around 17°C. Min temps (once the wind has dropped off overnight) will be around 11°C.

Surf and the Water

Clean 4-5 foot surf in the morning, before the wind switches. Thereafter it will pick up to over 6 feet but it will be very messy. Great conditions for windsurfing all day, but not so great for swimming, unless you head to a very sheltered eastern spot, such as Fermain. Smallish tides, with a low of 3.8m at 9:42am and a high of 7.3m at 3:49pm.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

Apart from Friday morning, which is looking rather cloudy, these two dry and largely sunny days, with a merciful relaxation of the wind. Thursday will have a force 2-3 WSW’ly, then on Friday this will increase to force 3-4. The air won’t be as mild as it was before Wednesday’s weather front cleared through. However, we can thank the slightly cooler air for the much improved visibility and for the lack of cloud. Max temps will generally be around 16°C both days, but Town will benefit from maximum shelter as well as its obvious urban effects, so we should easily climb to 17°C there.

Surf and the Water

Semi-clean surf, especially on Thursday, because the onshore wind will only be light… the waves will be 6 feet and lumpy on Thursday, dropping off to a more 4 feet on Friday. Swimming conditions should be excellent on all coasts on Thursday, then more focused along the east coast and up at Pembroke on Friday. Low tides will be late mornings and high tides will be around 5pm on Thursday and 6pm on Friday (7.9m and 8.6m respectively).

The Weekend

Weather

After some overnight rain, Saturday should be dry with mostly sunny skies and just a light force 3 WNW’ly breeze (max 16-17°C). Sunday will then have a little give and take, because the wind will back to a SSE’ly direction and this will bring warmer air (max 18°C). However, skies will become much cloudier as the day progresses, and then there could be some heavy showers breaking out towards the end of the day. However, the timing of those showers is uncertain at the moment, so they might just hold off until the night time, or possibly even until Monday.

Surf and the Water

Clean surf both days… 3-4 feet on Saturday, then clean 2-3 foot on Sunday. Low tides will be at lunchtime and high tides will be around dawn and dusk. Big tides… 8.9m increasing to 9.7m.

Next Week

Weather

With shallow low pressure systems over Biscay and France through the first half of the week, we can expect a few days of very light winds, cloudy skies and occasional showers (possibly heavy). Through the second half of the week, our weather will be dominated by deeper low pressure systems to the west of Ireland and Scotland, meaning that we can expect stronger SW’ly winds at that time. Again, skies will be mostly but not entirely cloudy. There are likely to be some wet spells... in this case we are probably looking at drizzly weather fronts rather than showers. Temperatures should be on the mild side all week, with daily maxima in the mid to high teens, and nightly minima staying in double figures.

Surf and the Water

With plenty of active weather systems in the North Atlantic, there will be no shortage of surf and it currently looks as though it will be mostly clean, with either very light winds or stronger winds from a cross-offshore direction. Depending on your preference on wind and weather, you might have to get up early or rush out on a lunchbreak, on any particular day, if you intend to seize a better quality moment. Swimmers will have to do likewise, but when winds are strong it will usually be the east coast or the north coast that offers the best shelter. Big tides to follow the full moon. The biggest high will be on Monday evening (9.8m) and then after a gradual tapering off, the smallest high will be 8.4m on Friday evening.

The next forecast update will be on Friday…
