Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 12 October 2022

Wednesday

Weather

A much cloudier day than Tuesday was. However, there should be some sunshine in the mid to late morning and there will be a little brightness in the afternoon. It’s going to be a very comfortable day though because we only have a light force 2 SW’ly breeze, gradually picking up to a light force 3 W’ly through the daytime, not increasing moderate force 4 until evening. The evening (late evening) will also be when the first spits and spots of light rain show up. Through the rest of the night, showers will come and go, eventually becoming quite heavy and thorough. Max temp 16°C in most areas but 17°C in Town.

Surf and the Water

Great swimming conditions all around the island during the morning, best of all along the east coast during the afternoon. Over on the west coast we should have some clean but very weak 1-2 waves to start the day, and then some similar conditions again towards dusk. High water will be 9.5m at 8:49am and low water will be 1.2m at 3:12pm.

Thursday and Friday

These will be the roughest days of the working week, especially Thursday. We will probably receive about 10mm of rain from a couple of weather fronts that will move through Thursday morning and early afternoon. From late afternoon until Friday morning, we can expect mist and drizzle, then through Friday skies will be cloudy but there will only be a small chance of a light shower from time to time. Wind-wise, it’s not looking quite as bad as previously expected, just a fresh force 5 SSW’ly wind on Thursday and a moderate force 4 WSW’ly on Friday. If it’s ever likely to notch up to strong force 6, then it will perhaps be in the mid-late afternoon on Thursday, just as the heaviest rain is clearing through. Despite the poor weather conditions, the air will be mild, so we should still manage max temps of 16-17°C.

Surf and the Water

The cleaner surf will certainly be on Thursday but I’m afraid it will only be 2-3 feet and sloppy. Friday will be similar in size and weakness, and it will be a bit messier to boot. The windsurfers and kite-surfers will certainly be happy on Thursday though. The tides will still be very large, but not quite so extreme as previous days… Thursday’s high will be 9.2m at 9:19am and Friday’s will be 8.7m at 9:47am. Low tides will be in the late afternoons.

The Weekend

Weather

Some weather fronts will sweep through, bringing further spells of rain which could be heavy. The timing of this rain is uncertain, but it currently looks as though the majority of it will fall through the hours of darkness, leaving plenty of useful dry time through the daylight hours. However, we are in for some fairly brisk winds, probably fresh force 5, WSW’ly on Saturday and SSW’ly on Sunday. Daily max temps staying around 16-17°C (Town always feeling warmest).

Surf and the Water

Messy surf on Saturday, starting off 2-3 feet, gradually picking up to 4 feet. Sunday’s surf will be much cleaner, stronger and bigger (6-8 feet), so that one could really be quite special. The tides will be much smaller, meaning that there will also be far more surfable hours through the day. Saturday’s high will be 8.2m at 10:13am and Sunday’s will be 7.6m at 10:41am. Low tides will be in the late afternoons.

Next Week

Weather

With a S’ly wind throughout the week (mostly force 4, sometimes as light as force 3, sometimes as strong as force 5), it’s certainly going to be milder than the mid-October average… daily max temps of 17-18°C. The unsettled theme will continue though, with mostly cloudy skies and showery weather fronts passing over us as they circulate a rather static mid-Atlantic depression. Some of the wet downpours could be heavy, but they will be punctuated by lengthy dry spells, which will probably feel very pleasant.

Surf and the Water

Clean surf throughout the week, generally around 4-6 feet. Good swimming conditions in the more sheltered western bays and also along the north coast. Very small tidal movements, particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday, when there will be less than 2m difference between the highs and the lows.

The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
