Thursday
Weather
We will be in a cooler airmass than on Wednesday, so the temperatures won’t be quite so lofty… peaking at 17-18°C rather than 19-20°C. There will be quite a lot more sunshine though, after some showery rain clears off around 8 or 9am. So yes that rain might be a bit of a spoiler for the morning commute but the rest of the day should be brilliant shades of blue and yellow. Furthermore, the S’ly wind will only be light force 3 in the afternoon, so it’s going to feel really comfortable and pleasant.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be clean as a whistle all day… 1-2 feet at the start of the day, increasing to 2-3 feet by the end. Swimming conditions will generally be better than the last couple of days due to lighter winds (especially in the morning). Low water will be at 9:40am and high water will be at 4pm (just 6.8m, so bigger than the previous days but still tiny in the grand scheme of things).
Friday
Weather
This is perhaps the most rotten day of the week, mainly due to the SSW’ly wind blowing strong F6 all day, but also due to their being lots of heavy showers in the area, some of which are bound to hammer the islands. At the moment these look most likely in the morning and the early afternoon, there’s even a slim chance that some of them will be thundery. If any times have the potential to be drier and brighter then it’s probably early morning and late afternoon. Certainly not cold though, with another max temp of 17-18°C.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be clean again because the wind will be cross-offshore, but it will be strong. Therefore younger and more novice surfers might struggle, but the stronger and more experienced surfers will be thriving (so too will the windsurfers and kite-surfers. Wave heights will be about 4-5feet at dawn, gradually picking up to 6+ feet by dusk. Swimming conditions will generally be difficult, except perhaps at high tide when the sea walls will off a little shelter. Low water will be at 10:50am and high water will be at 4:50pm (7.4m).
The Weekend
Weather
A couple of mostly cloudy but mostly dry days. Note the word ‘mostly’ because there should be a few sunny intervals or at least some brighter sky when the cloud is quite thin and high. Likewise, it’s not going to be entirely dry because a spell of fairly heavy rain is expected on Saturday night. Not a problem really if we are all asleep in bed. However, it is still a few days away, so it would only take a small change in the forecast to pull that rain into Saturday afternoon, or to push it into Sunday morning.
Surf and the Water
Another couple of days of clean waves for surfers to enjoy… 4-5 feet on Saturday and 2-3 feet on Sunday. The tidal range will be getting a bit larger again though, making it a little trickier to find that perfect uncrowded session. Low water will be around midday, and the highs will be shortly before dawn and shortly before dusk (picking up to 8.6m by Sunday evening).
Next Week
Looking very similar to the week we’ve just had… very mild (temps peaking in the high teens by day and only falling to the low teens by night). This will be due to a persistent S’ly airflow, sometimes quite light but mostly fresh to strong. Skies will be sunny at times but they will probably be cloudy for much more of the time, and there will be the odd spell of rain or a scattering of showers, thanks to the various weather fronts that will be circulating the low pressure systems in the nearby Atlantic.
Surf and the Water
Winds will stay S’ly for the most part, due to the persistent presence of low pressure in the nearby Atlantic. That low pressure will also be responsible for mass wave-production, so surfers will have another good week, with a couple of days in the 2-4 foot range to satisfy those who like it a bit smaller, and a couple of 4-6 foot days to satisfy those who like it on the larger side. The tidal range will be big, compared to the previous week, with highs of between 8.9 and 9.5m in the early mornings, and lows of around 1.5m in the early afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Friday…
