Saturday
Weather
Brrrrr a light NNW’ly breeze brought a very chilly Friday night and then Saturday’s temperature will only climb to a meagre 11-12°C. However, that’s only one side of the coin. Flip it over and you will find that we are in for the driest, sunniest and calmest day of the fortnight that it sits in. Indeed, the last full dry day was six days ago and the next one isn’t likely for another six or seven. So yes, your Saturday morning will be super sunny with a light NNW’ly breeze. Then, your afternoon will be sunny to start but cloudy to finish, with the wind staying light but backing to a WNW’ly direction. If you’re going out in the evening then you will notice a stronger SW’ly wind developing, but you will have to be out past midnight to get caught in the next rain that we are expecting. Minimum temperature overnight 8-9 strong force 6
Surf and the Water
The 4 foot surf should be pretty clean because the onshore wind will only be light. Furthermore, the small tidal movements should present lots of opportunities in both the morning and the afternoon. Low water will be 3.8m just shy of 9am and high water will be 7.3m just shy of 3pm.
Sunday
Weather
The overnight rain should be gone by morning, but there is the likelihood of a few daytime showers, mainly in the late afternoon. The biggest difference between Saturday and Sunday will be the wind strength, because we won’t have any of that lovely light force 3 anymore, rather we will have returned to a gusty force 5-6 WNW'ly. Head to Town for the best shelter from that wind. Daytime max 13°C, overnight min 9-10°C.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf won’t be any bigger but it will be a whole lot messier. Really this day is going to be one for the windsurfers and kite-surfers. If you’re a daily dipper, then your best swimming options will definitely be over on the east coast. Low water will be 3.2m around 9:45am and high water will be 7.8m around 3:45pm.
Monday
Weather
The first day of a very windy week (possibly the windiest), as a deep low will spiral along the south coast of England, giving us a strong force 6 S’ly blow in the morning, then a strong force 7 SW’ly through lunchtime, then perhaps occasionally step up to gale force 8 as it blasts from a WNW’ly direction through the afternoon and evening. If that’s not enough to make you stay indoors then let me also tell you about the rain… persistent until late morning, then showery through the rest of the day, but possibly heavy and certainly quite painful as it comes at you from near horizontal. There will be some sunshine between those afternoon showers though, so I guess it won’t feel so bad in the most sheltered parts of the island (Fermain instantly springs to mind). Max 13°C, min 7-8°C.
Surf and the Water
The 6 foot surf will be really clean right up until the mid-afternoon when the wind will likely switch onshore. It is going to be a tough paddle to catch the waves though, so once again it will probably be the windsurfers who have the biggest grins on their faces. Low water will be 2.8 around 10:30m and high water will be 8.5m around 4:30pm.
The Rest of Next Week
Weather
There will be some variation between true S’ly and true W’ly, as weather fronts come and go, but it’s fair to say that these four days will be characterised by a strong SW’ly winds… mostly force 6-7, just occasionally dipping down to force 4-5, and possibly sometimes stepping up to gale force 8. It looks as though every day will include some wetness but the precise timing and quantities are too uncertain to mention at this stage. Some of the rain will be persistent, as weather fronts sweep over the area, but most of it will be showery, with some sunny intervals and of course this also means plenty of beautiful rainbows. Max temps generally 12-14°C, min temps generally 8-10°C.
Surf and the Water
Solid but often messy surf, ranging between around 5 feet and 10 feet as fresh pulses of swell come and go. Great windsurfing conditions most days if not every day. Swimming conditions generally best in the sheltered east. Big tides, with lows around lunchtime and highs before or around dawn, then again around or after dark… the biggest tide being 9.5m on Friday morning.
