Monday
Weather
Not the only showery day of the week, but probably the most showery day, because this is when they will be the heaviest. Winds will be quite strong too (relative to the rest of the week)... force 4 to 5 SW’ly in the morning, veering WNW’ly in the afternoon, and pretty gusty whenever a shower sweeps through. We will also see a few sunny intervals and a couple of rainbows, so you could still get out there and have a very pleasant walk, especially along the east coast, between Town and Jerbourg. Max temp by day 12°C, min temp by night 8-9°C.
Surf and the Water
The biggest surf of this week, but also the messiest. Maybe some clean rideable waves on the north coast first thing in the morning, but as the wind veers NW’ly it will become increasing interesting down on the south coast through the afternoon. Maybe there will be a novelty nugget down? My top tip is to keep your expectations low because that’s the best way to find nice surprises. Apart from surfing, this is probably the best day of the week for west-coast windsurfing, and if it’s swimming that you’re interested in then without a doubt the east coast will be best for that. High water 8.8m around 9:20am, low water will be around 3:50pm.
Tuesday
Weather
Probably the only dead-cert dry day of this week, with a very gentle N’ly breeze bringing cool clean air to the islands. This will give fabulous visibility, both across the water to France and the Islands, but also giving texture and definition to the silvery cumulus clouds. Obviously a lovely day for a nice long walk or a bike ride. However, I doubt you’ll be taking your jackets off, because we are only expecting a top temperature of 11°C, then it’s going to get very chilly around sunset, with the temperature falling right down to 5 and 7°C overnight, so growers should be aware that we might see the first ground frost of the season.
Surf and the Water
Again the wind direction will mean that surfers should consider the south coast in the morning. However, the wind strength will be so light by lunchtime and through the afternoon, that it would be crazy not to focus on the usual west-coast spots, to make the most of the dropping swell (starting the day around 6 feet and finishing off around 4 feet). High tide will be 8.3m around 10:10am and low tide will be around 4:45pm (half an hour after sunset).
Wednesday to Friday
Weather
These days will be defined by a moderate E’ly airflow (something that we haven’t seen much of for a while). At this time of year, an E’ly is invariably cold… daily maxima probably in the high single figures, or only just touching double figures if we are lucky. As for the weather, that’s going to be a fairly even mix of sunny intervals, cloudy spells and brief light showers. As the time approaches, it might become more apparent that one day will stand out as the brightest and another as the gloomiest. However, at this point, such detail is too uncertain to go into.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean 2-3 foot waves on Wednesday, definitely one to seize upon if you are a longboarder or if you have generally been finding the waves to be too big and scary of late. A fresh pulse of swell will kick in towards the end of the day though, possibly picking up to 5 feet by dusk, then staying around that size or perhaps slightly bigger through Thursday, before moderating to 3-4 feet on Friday. The west coast will also be the best area for swimming through this latter end of the week, although I’m obviously that would be in the corners that are more sheltered from the swell. High tides will be late morning on Wednesday (7.8m), then through lunchtime on Thursday and Friday (7.5m).
The Weekend
Weather
Another two days of chilly E’ly winds, probably feeling quite unpleasant at times, because it will likely be stronger than the previous days (fresh force 5 with temperatures hovering between 7 and 9°C day and night). As with the previous days, the weather detail is uncertain, but the best way to describe it is as a fairly even mix of sunny intervals, cloudy spells and brief light showers.
Surf and the Water
Dreamy clean 3 foot surf both days. Quite a cold wind though, so you might consider putting your boot and gloves on (if you haven’t started to accessorise already). With the times of high tide shifting forward, there could be a speedy dawn session that would be worth seizing upon, but generally the conditions will be best and the water will be busiest during the afternoons. High tides will be 7.7m just before 3pm on Saturday and 8m just before 4pm on Sunday.
The next forecast update will be on Wednesday evening…
