Tuesday
Weather
Well Boxing Day’s sunshine and showers should all be watered down a little. The showers less frequent and less heavy this morning (and likely dying out by late morning), but also the sunshine not quite so bright or plentiful, due to the air being a tad more moist and mild. Max temperatures will be about 11°C in the afternoon, but there will be a brisk wind to accompany it I’m afraid… a force 5 SSW’ly, steadily ramping up to strong force 6 in the evening, when we will also see the arrival of some persistent rain and drizzle (overnight min just 9-10°C).
Surf and the Water
Clean 3 foot waves for those who have found the surf a bit too big of late. Big tides though, with a high of 9.2m at 9:15am and a low of 1.5m at 3:45pm.
Wednesday to Friday
Weather
This is the most unsettled end of the week… each day both wetter and windier than the first half of the week. Wednesday will have a strong force 6-7 S’ly wind in the morning, veering SW’ly by the afternoon, and the rain will be persistent and fairly heavy from dawn right through until mid or late afternoon. The night time and Thursday daytime, will see the coming and going of showers, punctuated by some pretty decent cloud-breaks, but the wind will continue to blow hard… this time a force 5-6 WSW’ly. Finally, Friday will be almost the precise replica of Wednesday, except probably a tad worse. The rainfall totals are likely to be around 10mm, 5mm and 15mm for the three consecutive days. Max temperatures 12°C, 11°C and 13°C. Min temperatures 9°C, 9°C and 11°C.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be much bigger, generally around 8 feet on the west coast but quite difficult to manage, because the cross-offshore wind will be so strong on Wednesday and Friday, but on Thursday, when the wind moderates a little, it will be coming from a cross-onshore direction. Tidal movements will still be quite large on Wednesday (morning and evening highs of around 8.9m) becoming medium sized by Friday (with a midday high of roughly 8m).
New Year’s Weekend
Weather
For Saturday (NY’s Eve) we will probably have seen the back of Friday’s heavy rain, but it will most likely stay cloudy with occasional showers and the wind will still be very strong… a force 6-7 SSW’ly. Then Sunday (NY’s Day) looks to be more of a sunshine, showers and rainbows day. However, those showers will probably be heavy, possibly with hail at times, and the wind only relaxing a tiny bit, as it veers to a force 5-6 SW’ly. Very mild though, especially on Saturday when temperatures could climb as high as 14°C.
Surf and the Water
Huge surf on Saturday… 12 feet or maybe bigger. However it will drop right off on Sunday, to a much more inclusive and welcoming 4-5 feet. Both days fairly clean, with cross-offshore winds. Tidal movements will still be medium-small, with early afternoon highs of 7.6m and 7.4m respectively.
The next forecast update will be on Friday …
