Bank Holiday Monday
Weather
There could be a couple of showers, especially around breakfast time, but the vast mahjority of the day will be dry and actually quite sunny. The brighter skies and greater visibility will be due to the air being cooler and drier than the previous days, but the trade-off is that the temperatures will be low, starting the day around 7°C, then peaking around 10°C, before dropping back to 7°C in the evening. Winds will be pretty light in the morning (force 3 WSW’ly) then even calmer in the afternoon (force 2 SW’ly).
Surf and the Water
The surf will be about 5 feet in the morning, dropping to 4 feet in the afternoon. However the wave quality will be trending upwards, as the cross-shore wind gets lighter and lighter. Low tide will be at 9:15am, then high tide will be at 3:15pm (7.4m).
Tuesday
Weather
A dry but cloudy day, maybe with a little brightness in the morning. The main difference from Monday will be the force 5-6 SSW’ly wind. That wind will make life a bit less comfortable, but it will bring milder air to the islands, so temperatures should easily climb to 12°C by the end of the day, and it might even reach 13°C later in the night. However, through the night, the weather conditions will follow a downward trajectory, as mist and drizzle develop, and the SW’ly wind cranks right up to force 7.
Surf and the Water
This time the surf will be fairly clean all day and the waves will be getting bigger, picking up from 2-3 feet in the morning to 5-6 feet by the end of the day. Windsurfers and kite-surfers will be happy to have a decent blast to play with. Swimmers won’t be so happy though, because they will have to seek shelter, which will probably mean waiting until the end of the day, when the tide is high (7.6m around 4:15pm).
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Weather
The wind will stay SW’ly through these days, occasionally veering slightly to a WSW’ly or backing to a SSW’ly. Likewise the strength will be pretty consistent at force 6, but it might occasionally tighten up to force 7, and it will also slacken off to force 5. With all these minor wind fluctuations, we will also see drizzly spells coming and going, and the temperature will stay around 11-12°C both day and night.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will fluctuate between about 4-5 feet at the smallest moments and 7-8 feet at the biggest, and the wave quality will also fluctuate as the wind wobbles between cross-offshore and cross-onshore. The low tides will be around midday and the high tides will all be during the hours of darkness, growing day by day but never getting particularly big, with the biggest high only being 8.4m around 6am on Friday.
The Weekend
Weather
Sorry but it’s looking even wetter and windier than during the week. Most of the time the wind will be a strong force 7 W’ly, but it might back SW’ly at times as bands of heavy rain approach from the Atlantic, and it might veer NW’ly as they clear away to the east. Regardless of those details, you will always find the best shelter in Town and in the Fermain area. Temperatures will just be a little lower than the previous days, hovering around 11°C on Saturday and around 10°C on Sunday.
Surf and the Water
The surf will carry on getting bigger… 6-8 feet on Saturday then 8-10 feet on Sunday. It will all be a bit of a mess though, unless we luck into a couple of hours of clean conditions first thing on Saturday. High tides will be just before dawn (8.6m and 8.7m respectively) and low tides will be in the early afternoons. Swimming conditions will always be best along the east coast, especially at Fermain.
