Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 11 January 2023

Wednesday and Thursday

Weather

Two very windy days… strong force 6 (occasionally 7) WSW’ly. The weather will be slightly different though, with Wednesday being a sunshine and showers day (the bulk of that sunshine in the morning and the bulk of the showers in the afternoon and evening. Thursday’s will then be a more cloudy and drizzly day (much like we just had on Tuesday). As for the temperatures, they will generally hover around 11°C, perhaps just a degree lower on Wednesday morning and occasionally a degree higher on Thursday.

Surf and the Water

The west coast surf will be about 8 feet on Wednesday and 10 feet on Thursday. Both days fairly choppy there but cleaner on the north coast. However, it will probably only be Thursday when the waves are big enough to be considered any good up north. Swimmers will find some shelter at Pembroke, very close to high tide, but eastern nooks like Fermain would probably be preferable. Tides will be about 8.3m high at 9am today and about 8.1m high at 9:30 tomorrow. Lows will be at 3:20pm and 3:50pm respectively.

Friday

Weather

Perhaps the sunniest and driest day of the week, with the showers being so sparsely scattered that they are unlikely to actually hit the islands, and the skies not really turning cloudy until late afternoon or evening time. Winds will be strong force 6 W’ly for the most part, possibly strong force 7 first thing in the morning, but then dropping to fresh force 5 by dusk. Max temperature 11°C.

Surf and the Water

The west coast surf will be about 12 feet and very messy I’m afraid. However hardcore windsurfers should find some decent action in the first half of the day. As for our cold water swimmers, this will definitely be a day to stick to very sheltered eastern spots. High water will be about 7.9m at 10am, low water will be around dusk.

The Weekend

Weather

Saturday will likely start off with persistent rain, but this will clear by late morning, to leave us with cloudy skies and just a few drizzly showers in the afternoon. Overnight, the showers will become heavy and frequent, some of them with hail. Those showers continuing through Sunday, but with sunny intervals and some rainbows to mix it all up a bit. Winds will be strong force 6 W’ly on both days, but there will be some much stronger gusts when the heaviest showers sweep through (probably 40-45mph). Temperatures will be on a downward trend, toppling from 11-12°C on Saturday, to just 8-9°C on Sunday.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be 8-10 feet and very messy, but no doubt there will be some windsurfers that manage to have a good time out there. Swimmers should either give it a miss or stick to the extreme shelter of eastern spots like Fermain at high water (late mornings 7.7m and 7.4m respectively). Low tides will be shortly after dusk.

Next Week

Weather

A cold NW’ly airflow will bring sunshine and hail showers on Monday, with temperatures unlikely to exceed 8°C. Then Tuesday will see a milder but southerly airflow, but that will only be a brief respite, before we return to a rather cold NW’ly with frequent hail showers through the rest of the week. The daily details regarding wind strength are uncertain, but it does look as though the week as a whole will be similarly windy to the week that we have just had.

Surf and the Water

The surf is looking pretty huge in the first half of the week, then smaller in the second. It’s all looking very messy, except for some clean west and north coast action on Tuesday, and perhaps a little south coast action on other days. Tides will be small through the first half of the week (with early afternoon highs that are only just over 7m), then they will be medium sized towards the end of the week (with late afternoon highs that are close to 8m).

The next forecast update will be on Saturday morning…
