Tuesday
Weather
The rain and hail showers of Monday night will have been so widespread and frequent that you could almost call them continuous. However, through Tuesday morning they will split apart until dry weather prevails by the afternoon. In fact, before dusk we should even be treated to a little sunshine. No chance of any warmth however, because the force 4 NE’ly wind will have brought some proper frigid air to the area, giving us a meagre max of 5°C followed by a min of just 2°C.
Surf and the Water
The cross-shore wind will rather spoil the west coast’s 4-5 foot surf. However, there’s a slim chance that Petit Port’s super-clean ripples will be large enough to ride. Certainly the south coast will be the most reliably sheltered area for our winter swimmers, although there will be some west-coast nooks that will also be smooth enough. Low water will be around breakfast time and high water will be roughly 7.4m around 2pm.
Wednesday
Weather
With the force 4 to 5 wind backing to a NW’ly direction, the air won’t be quite as perishing as on Tuesday. However, it will still be cold enough that the majority of the showers will fall as hail. That said, the showers will be scattered widely enough for quite a lot of sunshine to flood through. So yes max temps will only be a miserly 6-7°C but if you wear all the hats and gloves etc then you could still have a reasonably pleasant stroll around the island.
Surf and the Water
The 6-8 foot west coast surf will be pretty messy unfortunately, but there will definitely be enough swell to wrap into some south-coast spots. The question is just whether those novelty wedges are worth getting so cold for. Low water will be around breakfast time and high water will be about 7.5m at 3:15am.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
Winds will only be light force 3 (WNW’ly on Thursday and SSW’ly on Friday). This means that Thursday’s copious sunshine should feel really pleasant, especially in Town and along the rest of the east coast. Moving onto Friday, although much cloudier and possibly wet at times, the temperature will be about the same (peaking around 8°C) so that day should also feel much more comfortable than the first half of the week.
Surf and the Water
Great news for surfers because the waves will be about 3-4 feet on both days… fairly clean on Thursday, then really clean on Friday. Low tides will be in the late mornings and high tides will be around dusk (7.9m and 8.4m respectively),
The Weekend
Weather
Carrying on in a similar fashion to Friday, with light SSW’ly breezes bringing mostly dry weather but with cloudy skies. There is the chance of a little light rain or drizzle at times. Hopefully that won’t develop into anything more significant as the forecast is updated, but it’s probably a good idea to accept that this is a possibility. Temperatures bang on average for mid-January, with daily highs of 9-10°C and nightly mins of 7-8°C.
Surf and the Water
More clean 3-4 foot surf on Saturday, followed by 2-3 foot surf on Sunday. Winds too light to be of interest to windsurfers, but just light enough to make our winter swimmers quite happy. The tides will be getting bigger, with lows at lunchtime and highs shortly before dawn and after dusk (fractionally under 9m on Saturday and fractionally over 9m on Sunday).
The next forecast update will be on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning…
