Thursday
Weather
The showers of Wednesday will have become lighter, fewer and less wintry overnight. However there will still be a few rattling around the area, so it’s not a certainty that it will stay dry but it is quite likely. Skies will be fairly cloudy though, spilling out from a weather system over western Brittany. That is until the late afternoon, when it will probably become sunny for a brief time before dark. Best news of all, is probably the lightness of the wind, because this is the first of a string of days with nothing stronger than force 3. The direction on this day will be W’ly, but it will be so light that this is of little consequence. Daytime max 6-7°C, overnight min 2-4°C, with a ground frost in places.
Surf and the Water
The west coast’s 4-5 foot surf will be lovely and clean, especially in the afternoon. Low water will be around 10:20am and high water will be around 4:30pm (rough 8m). All coasts will be good for our cold-water swimmers, especially towards the end of the day.
Friday
Weather
The force 2-3 wind will come from a NW’ly direction, making the south and east coasts marginally milder than the north and west. However, everywhere should feel pretty pleasant with dry weather, sunny skies and a slightly higher max temp of 7-8°C. We should still be in for another chilly night though, with a min of 2-4°C, so growers should be prepared to protect their plants from another ground frost.
Surf and the Water
The west coast surf will carry on at 4-5 feet, and it should still be pretty clean, due to the lightness of the onshore wind. Once again, low water will be in the late morning and this time the 8.3m high tide will be peaking around 5:30pm (about 40 minutes after sunset).
The Weekend
Weather
Winds will remain very light but the direction will switch to an E’ly on Saturday and then a S’ly on Sunday. The E’ly will bring cool but clear air, to give us a lovely sunny Saturday. Then the S’ly will bring milder but slightly wetter air, to give us a much cloudier Sunday. Those clouds probably won’t be thick enough to squeeze any rain out though, so we are probably looking at totally dry and settled weekend. The temperature probably peaking around 8°C each day, but falling to different minima overnight… around 4°C on Saturday night, with the possibility of ground frost, then about 6°C on Sunday night, with no chance of frost, but maybe the development of some drizzly rain after midnight.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean 3-4 foot surf on both days. Made slightly awkward by the large tidal range though, with lows at lunchtime and pre-dawn highs of 8.7m on Saturday and 9.2m on Sunday.
Next Week
Weather
With the exception of a super-sunny Tuesday, it’s looking like a mostly cloudy week. Some of those cloudy days will allow a little brightness to sneak through, but on the flip side, the other cloudy days will probably squeeze out some light rain or drizzle. It will all be mild and relaxed though, compared to the first half of January. Temperatures peaking between 8 and 10°C each day. Winds… variable and mostly light on Monday and Tuesday, then moderate to fresh N’ly from Wednesday onward.
Surf and the Water
Big tides all week, with the highest high being about 9.7m at breakfast time on Tuesday and then the smallest high being about 8.6m in the late morning on Friday. As for the surf, it’s looking clean in the first half of the week, then messy in the second. Always a pretty decent sized though (fluctuating between 3 and 6 feet). What’s more, windsurfers and kitesurfers should even find some action in the second half of the week.
The next forecast update will be on Saturday…
