Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 20 January 2023

Saturday

Weather

Gorgeously sunny. Not hot but pretty comfortable actually because the ENE’ly wind will only be light force 3. The max temp will be 7°C, which is about 2°C lower than on Friday, but the visibility will be just as incredible, probably even better actually, so it will really be perfect for a nice long walk, especially along the south coast cliff paths. Overnight temperatures will be much colder again, with a minimum of about 1°C and a widespread ground frost.

Surf and the Water

High tide will be about an hour before dawn and after dusk (8.2m and 8.3m respectively). Low tide will be shortly after midday. The 2-3 foot surf will be reasonably clean, the wind will be cross-shore but it won’t be strong enough to be too much of a problem. However, if you are going for a swim then it would still be nicer to filter the wind out altogether, and the south coast beaches will definitely be best for us.

Sunday

Weather

Quite a lot cloudier than Saturday but still with some soft sunshine filtering through at times. Max temperatures will be even lower than on Saturday, only 5-6°C. However, the wind will be practically non-existent, so it’s still going to be lovely in a very ambient and wintry kind of way. Night time shouldn’t be quite so cold though, because the cloudier skies will have a bit of an insulating effect, this time we are probably looking at 2-3°C for the minimum and the ground frost won’t be nearly so widespread.

Surf and the Water

The west coast surf will be 2-3 feet again, possibly picking up to 4-5 feet shortly before dusk, but either way it will be floorlessly glassy. High water will be a little bit before dawn and then a couple of hours after dusk (9.2m and 9m respectively). Low water will be at lunchtime.

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

The wind will be a force 3 NE’ly for most of the time, but it will pick up to moderate force 4 at times and that’s going to feel pretty chilly because skies are expected to be mostly cloudy. That said, it looks as though it will stay dry, which is quite an improvement on previous expectations. Daily maxima should be about 7°C and nightly minima should be around 4°C, with ground frost very unlikely.

Surf and the Water

4 foot surf on Monday, dropping to 3 feet on Tuesday. The wind will be cross-shore, sometimes strong enough make it messy, but also easing off at times and allowing the waves to become cleaner. Tides will be high at breakfast time (9.5m and 9.7m respectively) and low in the mid-afternoons.

Wednesday to Friday

Weather

Force 3-4 N’ly winds on Wednesday, increasing force 4 to 5 on Thursday and then backing NW’ly on Friday. These wind changes are all due to the high pressure centre shifting out into the Atlantic, meaning that pressure will be falling over the Channel islands, and with falling pressure we can expect to see the return of showers. They will come and go through each day, but they will be brief (only lasting minutes, as opposed to the dry interludes which will last a matter of hours) and they won’t be nearly as heavy as the showers we had earlier in the month. Daily maxima should be 8-9°C and nightly minima should be 6-7°C.

Surf and the Water

Messy surf, gradually dropping from 3-4 feet down to 1-2 feet. Maybe a few moments of enjoyment for windsurfers and kite-surfers though. As for the swimming, the south coast will definitely be best for that. High tides will be in the mid-mornings (9.6m, 9.3m and 8.7m respectively) and low tides will be towards dusk.

The next forecast update will be on Monday evening…
