Wednesday
Sunny through most of the day, but cloudy to finish, and then some mist and drizzle coming and going through the the evening and the rest of the night. Whilst those changes occur, the wind will also be shifting from the southeasterly that we have become used to over the past four or five days… force 3 (perhaps occasionally force 4) S’ly through most of the day, veering W’ly around dusk, then becoming quite strong overnight (force 5-6) as it backs to a straight SW’ly. Max temp a mild and comfortable 12°C. Min temp around 8°C.
Surf and the Water
The swell will build through the day… 2-3 feet to start, 4-5 feet to finish. Through most of the day, those waves will be super-clean, but it looks as though things will get pretty choppy towards dusk. If it’s smooth swimming conditions that you’re after then they should be along the west and north coasts through most of the day and then over to the east coast towards dusk. Tiny tidal movements, with a lunchtime high of only 6.8m.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
The change to unsettled conditions will have been thoroughly made, as we barely see a single ray of sunshine through the last two days of the working week. Force 5 or perhaps occasionally force 6, WSW’ly winds will bring lots of cloud, some of it low enough for mist and hill fog, some of it thick enough to give rain or drizzle (probably wettest of all on Thursday morning, but even then it won’t be heavy, just rather annoying). The temperature holding a fairly flat line throughout this period, just rising from 9-10°C minima to 11-12°C maxima.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be 5-6 foot and choppy through most of this time, but it will probably be a bit smaller and cleaner on Thursday morning. Swimmers will definitely want to shoot for the high-tide east-coast sessions if they want to find something smooth and manageable. Those high tides will be 6.9m around 3pm on Thursday, then 7.4m around 4:20pm on Friday.
The Weekend
Weather
There should be a very slow improvement through these two days… winds flopping between SW’ly and NW’ly and dropping to just light force 3, occasionally moderate force 4. Skies will be a mix of cloudy and bright… brightest when the wind nudges round to that NW’ly direction (mainly on Sunday) and cloudiest when the wind comes from the southwest (mainly on Saturday), possibly also pestering us with a little mist and drizzle during those periods.
Surf and the Water
The surf will carry on around 5-6 foot and it will be a bit choppy on the whole, but probably clean enough to stitch some lovely rides together (especially on Saturday). The tides will be getting bigger, but the highs will be before dawn and shortly after dusk (close to 8m on Saturday and close to 9m on Sunday). Low tides will be at 11:20am Saturday, then 12:15pm Sunday.
The next forecast update will be on Friday…
