Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 17 February 2023

Friday

A very murky start to the day, with fog and perhaps a little drizzle at the airport, and other elevated areas. The morning should see a gradual improvement as the fog first turns to mist and then lifts right up above the ground and visibility becomes good. The afternoon should then actually become quite bright at times, as the cloud becomes very thin. There won’t be much change in wind as the day progresses though, pretty much holding a force 4 to 5 WSW’ly for the duration. Max temp a mild and comfortable 12°C. Min temp around 9-10°C.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be 4-6 feet and rather choppy. However, it will still be good to ride in a good few areas, especially during the afternoon. If it’s smooth swimming conditions that you’re after then they should be along the east coast, especially around Fermain late afternoon. Low water will be around 10:15am and high water will be around 4:20pm (roughly 7.4m).

Saturday

Weather

Same wind and temperatures as Friday. However, this time the cloud will gradually lower and thicken through the afternoon, meaning that the hill fog and drizzle will probably be more of a problem for the evening rather than the morning.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be about a foot bigger than on Friday, but similarly choppy. Once again, the swimming conditions will be best along the east coast towards the end of the day. Low tide will be at 11:20am. High tide will be about 8.1m at 5:20pm (just before dusk).

Sunday

Weather

As high pressure muscles back over the Channel, the wind will veer NW’ly and relax to light force 3. This will bring much drier and marginally cooler air to the islands, which will lead to larger cloud breaks and therefore some decent sunny spells. Although the temperature might be a degree lower than the previous days, it will actually feel quite a bit more pleasant, especially down along the south coast cliff paths and beaches.

Surf and the Water

The west-coast surf will be about 5 feet and choppy to start the day, then 4 feet and reasonably clean to finish. Swimmers will find the best conditions along the south coast in the morning, and then most areas should be reasonably smooth towards the end of the day. Low water will be shortly after midday. High water will be about 8.7m shortly before dawn and after dusk.

Next Week

Weather

High pressure to start the week, followed by slack pressure as we find ourselves in no man’s land, in between weather systems, from mid-week onwards. This means that the whole week will have light winds, almost flat calm at times. Every day will have a mixture of cloudy skies and clear spells. Monday and Tuesday are likely to be bone dry. Subsequent days will probably have some showers rattling around the area. If there’s one day that might be a little more wet and windy, then it would probably be on Wednesday. However, at this stage, it looks as though that might happen overnight, and therefore not really be any bother to anybody. Temperatures will be about average, peaking between 9 and 11°C each day and falling to between 5 and 9° overnight, depending on how much wind and cloud there is.

Surf and the Water

The surf should be pretty clean throughout the week… 4-5 feet at first, then 2-3 feet later. Tides will be big, with highs in the mornings and evenings, all over 9m in depth, some of them as deep as 10m.

The next forecast update will be on Monday morning…
