Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 26 February 2023

Monday

Well, the overall story of fresh to strong (and rather cold) winds has not changed (force 4 to 6 NE’ly or ENE’ly). However previous expectations proved to be wrong, when it came to which weekend day would have the most showers. Likewise, the previous expectations for Monday to be wetter than Tuesday have also flipped completely around. So, now Monday is expected to be the driest day, with some sunny spells and only an outside chance of catching one or two brief showers (most probably of rain, but possibly with a little small hail or sleet at times). Daytime max around 7°C, overnight min around 4-5°C.

Surf and the Water

The long period swell of Sunday evening should have settled into a much more consistent 2-3 feet. However, the wind will really make like difficult on the west coast. I’m not sure the swell will be strong enough to survive as it wraps into the south coast bays, but it will certainly be clean down there, so it could be worth a look (and that will also be the best place to go if you are a sea swimmer). High tide will be just 7.2m around 11am. Low tide will be around 5:30pm.

Tuesday

Weather

No change in wind, but now this day is expected to be increasingly cloudy through the morning, with showers becoming quite frequent and prolonged by the afternoon, not really clearing away properly until dusk. Once again those showers will mostly fall as rain, but there is also likely to be some small hail or sleet at times. Daytime max around 7°C, overnight min around 4-5°C.

Surf and the Water

The wind will be just as annoying on the west coast, but the swell will really pick up… 4 feet in the morning, 6 feet in the afternoon, and it should easily be strong enough to wrap into the south coast bays, where it will of course be much cleaner (and that will also be the best place to go if you are a sea swimmer). High tide will be just 6.5m around midday.

Wednesday to Friday

Weather

Winds will carry on coming from a more or less NE’ly direction, but they will gradually ease… force 3 to 5 on Wednesday and on Thursday morning, then just force 2-3 on Thursday afternoon and through Friday. This will allow the occasional sunny spells to feel a bit more pleasant, and we should see temperatures creep up to 8°C maxima. The nights won’t be any milder though, so we can expect air temperatures to possibly plunge as low as 3°C and growers should be aware that the ground temperature might fall a little below zero.

Surf and the Water

The swell should remain a strong 6 feet through most of Wednesday and it should come back to that kind of size by the end of Friday. However, there will be a nice respite when it drops to just 3 feet through Thursday and the first half of Friday. The wind will still be NE’ly but it will decrease day by day, making the west-coast waves quite a bit cleaner than previously. Tides will be low in the mornings and high in the afternoons (6.1m, 6.3m and 6.8m respectively).

The Weekend

Weather

Much like Friday, showers will be extremely unlikely, and the occasional sunny spell should feel very pleasant because the wind will only be a light force 2 to 3 NE’ly. Daily max temps are likely to 8°C and nightly minima around 3°C with a ground frost in places.

Surf and the Water

The west coast surf will drop from 4 feet on Saturday morning to 3 feet in the afternoon, then it should hold around 2 feet through Sunday. The waves should be pretty clean because the cross-shore wind will only be light. The best swimming conditions will still be down south, but the other coasts won’t be too bad now that the wind is lighter. Tides will be low shortly before midday and high around dusk (roughly 7.5m on Saturday and 8m on Sunday).

The next forecast update will be on Wednesday morning…
