Wednesday
Weather
A pretty straight-forward mostly dry but rather cloudy day. There could be some showers towards the end of the day, but not until likely until after the school run and nothing like as heavy as Tuesday evening’s showers (that’s if they even happen at all). The wind will be NE’ly moderate force 4 for the most part, but probably fresh force 5 at times in the afternoon. Daytime max around 7-8°C, overnight min around 4-5°C.
Surf and the Water
The really strong swell that turned up on Tuesday will gradually decline through Wednesday, starting off around 6 feet and finishing around 4 feet. The wind will be annoyingly cross-shore again on the west coast though, so if you’re feeling adventurous then there’s a decent chance you’ll be rewarded on the south coast. Low tide will be at breakfast time. High tide will be just a tiny 6.1m around 1:40pm.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
There will be the odd occasion when the clouds part to reveal a bit of sunshine by day or moonlight by night. However, the vast majority of the time will be rather overcast. The good news however, is that both days should be totally dry and that NE’ly wind won’t be quite such a nag any more, just blowing light force 3 for much of the most part, and only creeping up to moderate force 4 from time to time. Daytime max temps staying around 7-8°C, min around 4°C on Thursday night and 3°C Friday night.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be too small for the south coast. However, it should be a little bit cleaner on the west coast due to the cross-shore wind being a bit lighter than previous days. Wave-heights will be around 2 to 3 feet until Friday afternoon, when they pick up to 4 or 5 feet. Tidal movements will remain very small, with lows in the mornings and high in the afternoons (6.3m and 6.8m respectively).
The Weekend
Weather
A couple of cloudy days, with only a few brief sunny intervals if we’re lucky. Sometimes the cloud will be thick enough to squeeze out some showers (most likely on Saturday morning or late afternoon Sunday), but if this is the case then we are only talking about a few spits and spots. Overall, it shouldn’t feel too unpleasant really, because high pressure will be centred very close to home, meaning that the NE’ly wind will be so much lighter than the previous days, just light force 2 for the most part. Daily max temps are likely to 7-8°C and nightly minima around 3-4°C with the chance of some ground frost in places.
Surf and the Water
The west coast surf will be 3 to 4 feet both days and the waves should be lovely and clean because the cross-shore wind will be so light. Tides will be low shortly before midday and high around dusk (roughly 7.5m on Saturday and 8m on Sunday).
Next Week
Weather
The wind will stay very light though Sunday night and Monday, and the direction will be rather all-over-the-place, meaning that it’s difficult to assess how many showers will hit the islands and how brief or prolonged the may be. However, with cold air over relatively warm sea, they will probably be heavy enough to produce a wintry mix of hail and sleet. By Tuesday, the light breeze will have established a NW’ly direction and then it will gradually strengthen through the rest of the week, such that it will probably be blowing fresh force 5 by Thursday and Friday. This means that it won’t really feel any warmer than the previous days, but the temperature probably will rise to daily maxima of 9 or 10°C, the weather alternating between sunshine and showers, those showers still wintry on Wednesday, but likely turning back into normal rain showers through Thursday and Friday.
Surf and the Water
Clean medium-sized surf at the start of the week, likely turning bigger as it gets messy through the rest of the week. Tides getting bigger around Tuesday’s full moon, with highs just a little under 9m around dawn and dusk. The north and west coasts becoming increasingly suitable for windsurfing and kitesurfing. The south coast continuing to have the smoothest water for swimming.
