Saturday
Weather
The good news about this day will be the ascending temperature. Starting off decidedly cold at around 4°C but picking up to a comfortable 11°C by mid-late afternoon. However, as always, there is flip-side to this coin, because the milder it gets, the murkier it will also become… the cloud lowering, to bring mist and fog patches, along with some spells of rain or drizzle. Wind-wise, it’s not looking too bad… moderate force 4 SE’ly backing to a light force 3 S’ly by lunchtime and then strengthening to a fresh for 5 W’ly by dusk.
Surf and the Water
Beautifully clean 3-4 foot surf for the west coast, right up until late afternoon, when the wind will flip onshore, but the tide be too low by then anyway. High water will be about 9m at 8:45am. If you’re a sea swimmer then I’d probably recommend hitting the east coast towards the end of the day. Although the weather looks pretty foul at that time, it should at least be the warmest time of the day.
Sunday
Weather
Although still cloudy and likely turning wet towards the end of the day, it does at least look a lot less murky than Saturday… the cloud being too high to give mist and hill-fog. The wind be the same strength as on Saturday, but reversing in direction, backing from W’ly at dawn to S’ly by dusk. The temperature comfortably mild again, with a max of 11°C in most places and likely 12°C in Town.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be 4-5 feet and cleanish in the morning, picking up to 6-8 feet and absolutely pristine through the afternoon. That said, low tide will be around 3:30pm, so those chunky waves will generally be reserved for the reefs rather than the beaches. However, because the swell will be so strong there should also be some rideable waves breaking over the sand on the north coast too. High water will be about 8.6m at 9:15am.
Monday
Weather
This day stands out as the windiest, because the SW’ly will be about as strong as it was on the Friday just gone… gale force 8 through most of the day, only easing to strong force 6 as it veers WNW’ly in the late evening or the night time. Weather-wise, it will simply be sunny spells and occasional showers (possibly heavy). Temperature-wise, mild again, as we hover around 11-12°C throughout the day, then gradually slip away to about 7°C overnight.
Surf and the Water
8-10 foot surf on the west coast, but the winds will be very challenging indeed. High water will be about 8.3m just before 10am, so if you are a really dedicated sea swimmer then this would be the time to head for the extreme shelter of Fermain.
The Rest of Next Week
Weather
A typical week of changeable weather, as the winds (mostly force 4-5) generally alternate between SW’ly and S’ly, with the passing of weather fronts. Some of those fronts will be brief and showery, whilst others will bring hours of persistent rain or drizzle. Their timing are too uncertain to pin down at the moment, so there is the chance that one or two of the days will reserve all their rainfall for the hours of darkness, but I wouldn’t want to bet too much money on it. As for the temperatures, Tuesday is looking rather chilly, with temperatures only reaching the high single figures. It should be low double figures every other day though, and we might even sneak up to 13°C if we are treated to some sunshine on Friday.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be clean for the majority of the time, with the tidal range shrinking nicely (just under 8m for the high on Tuesday, around 7m on Wednesday and slightly less than 7m on Thursday and Friday. Wave heights will start off with a whopping 10 feet, dropping to about 3 feet by Thursday and then likely picking up to 5 or 6 feet again on Friday.
The next forecast update will be on Monday evening or Tuesday morning…
