Thursday and Friday
Weather
These two days will have stronger SW’ly winds and heavier rain than earlier in the week. Starting with Thursday, there will only be one or two showers in the morning, but they will start to become frequent around lunchtime and then they will just merge into persistent rain through the afternoon and early evening. The cloud will be very low during that afternoon rain so there might also be some mist and fog in the higher parishes. Thursday’s winds will be force 5-6 (occasionally force 4 in the afternoon) and the max temp will be about 11°C. Moving through Friday, the wind will gradually increase strong force 6-7 but the rain will fall as short sharp showers, with lengthy spells of dryness and brightness in between. Although they will never last longer than a few minutes, those showers could be heavy enough for hail and thunder, and they could bring wind gusts as strong as 50mph. Max temp around 11°C again.
Surf and the Water
Cleanish surf on the west coast… 7-9 feet on Thursday and 9-11 feet on Friday. Head to the east coast (especially Fermain) to find some sheltered water for swimming. Big tides, with highs around 8am and 8pm (give or take half an hour), marginally over 10m on Thursday, marginally under 10 on Friday.
The Weekend
Weather
It looks as though we might get lucky with the daylight hours on both days, because it looks as though the really rotten weather will come on Saturday night (don’t forget the clocks change on that night too). For your Saturday, the morning is looking bright, but the afternoon more cloudy. All dry though, with a force 6 W’ly wind gradually backing to a force 4-5 S’ly. Then, rain will set in around dusk and it will be quite heavy through much of the evening, before fragmenting into occasional showers for the rest of the night. By dawn Sunday, the wind will have switched to a force 4-5 NNW’ly and the showers will be few and far between. We will probably catch one or two brief soakings on Sunday morning, but the afternoon should be dry and mainly sunny. The air will be quite chilly though, only getting up to about 9°C for the max on Sunday (that’s a couple of degrees lower than the previous few days). Growers should watch out for Sunday night, because clear skies and decreasing winds will lead to a much lower minimum temp than we have seen all week… probably around 5°C with a ground frost developing in the most sheltered areas.
Surf and the Water
Cleanish 10 foot surf through most of Saturday, then choppier 8 foot surf on Sunday. That said, there could be some clean waves on the south coast that would be worth investigating. The tides will still be large but not so large as the previous days… highs of about 9.6m at breakfast time on Saturday, then 8.5m on Sunday.
Next Week
Weather
Monday looks lovely… very light N’ly breezes and lots of sunshine. Tuesday will be cloudier but probably a degree or two warmer, as the breeze will be coming up from the south. There might just be a spit and a spot of rain before dusk, but it will probably be overnight before we see any proper showers. As for the rest of the week, we should hang on to the mild but rather cloudy airflow, either coming from the south or the southwest. There might be some heavy showers from time to time but it looks as though there will be much more dry time, and the wind will be mostly light force 3 or moderate force 4, so most outdoor activities will carry on unhindered. Daily max temps will climb from about 9 or 10°C on Monday to about 13°C by Wednesday or Thursday. Nightly min temps should sit comfortably around 8 or 9°C, except for on Monday night, when it could dip to about 5°C with ground frost developing in places.
Surf and the Water
Cleanish fun-size surf on Monday (probably around 3-4 feet). Slightly bigger and slightly cleaner waves through the rest of the week. Swimming conditions will generally be best on the east coast. Tides getting small… highs of roughly 8m mid-morning Monday, 7m late morning Tuesday, 6m lunchtime Wednesday and Thursday and mid-afternoon Friday.
