Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 24 March 2023

Saturday

Weather

A similar weather story to the Friday we’ve just had. In other words sunshine and showers. However, in this instance the showers will be fewer and further between, and the sunshine will be pretty weak, due to lots of high cirrus cloud. This means that, on balance, the two days will feel pretty similar… the temperature still peaking around 11°C and the wind coming from a SW’ly direction (force 5-6 in the morning, decreasing force 4 in the afternoon). After sunset things will get a bit fruity though, because we will have a spell of fairly heavy rain between about 7pm and midnight, and then a succession of heavy showers through the second half of the night (min temps 7-8°C).

Surf and the Water

The surf will shrink through the day (10 feet dropping to 6 feet), but it will become increasingly clean as the winds fall light and back S’ly in the afternoon. The tide will be on the low side whilst the waves are cleanest (low water at 3:24pm) so you might have to rummage around to find the perfect session. Windsurfers will find their favourite conditions during the morning. Swimmers probably will as well (providing it’s in sheltered eastern Bays like Fermain). High water will be 9.5m just before 9am (very splashy on the west coast again, but not as bad as the previous days).

Sunday

Weather

Saturday night’s showers shouldn’t eat too far into Sunday morning, probably no later than 9am (and don’t forget that the clocks will have changed, so lots of people will still be in bed anyway). The rest of the day should be dry, with a moderate force 4 W’ly wind gradually veering to a N’ly. This wind change, will bring a gradual cooling to the atmosphere, but this will also result in very clean and crisp visibility, so the sunny spells will be beautiful, as will the sunset and the starry skies that follow. Winds will veer to a light force 3 NE’ly overnight and this, combined with clear spells, might allow temperatures to fall as low as 5°C, so it’s not out of the question that we will see some ground frost in places.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be shrinking again as the day progresses (6 feet dropping to 4 feet), but once again it will be becoming cleaner whilst this happens. This time the wind will be onshore all day but it will be much lighter in the afternoon than in the morning. And if it’s sea swimming that you’re interested in, then the best locations will be east coast in the morning and then south coast in the afternoon. High water will be 8.8m around 10:20am and low tide will be 4:45pm.

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

Monday will probably have some cloudy skies in the morning, but we should see long spells of sunshine through the afternoon. The breeze will be very light indeed, just force 2-3, but it will be coming from a NE’ly direction so, despite the sunshine, the air will be cool and the max temperature will only be 8-9°C in most areas, but the south coast beaches and cliff paths might sneak up to 10°C. The first half of the night will then be chilly, with lows of about 5°C and the chance of a ground frost in places. However, after midnight, a S'ly breeze will bring slightly milder air, as well as a blanket of cloud, and this will be the turning point towards higher max and min temps throughout the rest of the week. Tuesday is looking much cloudier than Monday, but we might see a little soft sunshine during the afternoon. There is a possibility of one or two showers during the daytime, but it will most probably stay dry until those showers become more widespread in the evening. Tuesday’s max should be 11°C and the overnight min should be about 8°C.

Surf and the Water

Cleanish 3-4 foot waves on Monday, followed by really clean 2-3 foot waves on Tuesday. Swimming conditions will be best on the south coast on Monday and then the west coast on Tuesday. The tides will be high in the late mornings (7.9m and 7.2m respectively) and they will be low between 5 and 6pm.

The Rest of Next Week

Weather

Gradually becoming more windy and more showery through Wednesday and Thursday, although that wind will be SSW’ly so it will be on the mild side so temperatures are likely to peak at 12 or even 13°C, and overnight temperatures are unlikely to fall below 9-10°C. Come Friday, a bit of give and take because the fresh wind will switch to a marginally cooler WNW’ly, but we should also see a bit more in the way of sunshine.

Surf and the Water

Bigger surf, generally around 6 feet, often clean whilst the wind is close to S’ly but sometimes messy whilst the wind is close to W’ly. Speaking of wind, it should be strong enough for windsurfers and kite-surfers to have lots of fun. As for the tidal movements, they will be pretty tiny, with highs of between 6m and 6.5m (lunchtime on Wednesday and Thursday, mid-afternoon on Friday).

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening…
