Tuesday and Wednesday
Weather
In the opposite order to Monday, Tuesday looks set to be dry in the morning and then very wet and rather murky in the second half of the day. If we include the overnight period, we will probably end up with between 10 and 20 mm of rainfall, so the puddles will be pretty large by Wednesday morning. In addition to this, the wind will be ever strengthening… a relatively mellow force 4-5 SSW’ly wind through daylight Tuesday, picking up to force 5-6 overnight and veering WSW’ly. Then, it’s through Wednesday that the wind will really kick into action. Yes, whilst the persistent rain is replaced by sunshine and occasional heavy showers, that WSW’ly wind will ramp right up to strong force 6-7 in the morning and then strong force 7 to gale force 8 in the afternoon and evening. Max temps around 12°C on Tuesday and just 11°C on Wednesday. Min temps around 7-8°C towards the end of each night.
Surf and the Water
5-6 foot west-coast surf on Tuesday, a little choppy in the morning but then lovely and clean in the afternoon. Wednesday’s waves will crank up to 8 feet but unfortunately they will become very choppy indeed. Not at all good for surfers but pretty great for hardcore windsurfers. If it’s a swim you’re after, then you should find some reasonably sheltered nooks along the north and west coasts on Tuesday, but you will definitely need the maximum shelter of Fermain Bay on Wednesday. Tides will be high in the late mornings (8.2m and 7.6m respectively). Low tides will be around dinner time.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
Thursday will be the gradual wind down from Wednesday’s gale force winds and heavy showers. This time the wind will be a fresh force 5 WNW’ly, bringing cooler air (max temp just 10°C) and quite a lot of sunshine. The showers... heavy at first, but gradually becoming lighter and much less frequent. However, this improving trend will be very short-lived because we are due a dose of prolonged rain during the night time and into Friday morning, much like Tuesday night the total rainfall will be between 10mm and 20mm, so the puddles will be pretty big on Friday morning, and then they will keep getting topped up, as showers come and go through Friday daytime. Friday’s winds aren’t currently expected to be nasty though, only force 3 to 4 on this occasion, and coming from almost every direction of the compass, as the centre of the low pressure system moves directly over the islands. Max temps around 10°C on Thursday and then 11°C on Friday.
Surf and the Water
The west coast surf will be 5-6 feet and very choppy on Thursday (but there could be some cleanish 2-footers to play with down on the south coast. Friday’s surf will only be 3-4 feet along the west-coast, but conditions will become increasingly clean as the day progresses. Tides will be high at lunchtime (7m and 6.7m respectively). Low tides will be around breakfast time and dinner time.
The Weekend
Weather
A mixture of cloud and sunshine, but generally dry and settled, with Saturday’s force 3-4 WNW’ly wind bringing us a top temperature of 12-13°C and then Sunday’s force 2-3 Sly taking the temperature right up to 14 or 15°C. It’s a long way off, so the forecast could easily change, but it currently looks as though the weekend will provide a very welcome respite from the wet and windy week days.
Surf and the Water
The 4-5 foot surf will be increasingly clean through Saturday and then really clean on Sunday. Swimming conditions will also be better than earlier in the week, due to much lighter winds. Tides will be low in the mid-mornings and high in the late afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Wednesday or Thursday…
