Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 11 May 2023

Friday

Weather

We should get off to a sunny start, but cloud will increase steadily through the day, until we see a little rain around dinner time. However, as the weather slips gentle downhill, the wind story will be an improving one… dropping from a force 3-4 NE’ly in the morning to a force 2-3 N’ly in the afternoon. The max temperature will be a modest 14°C, then the overnight minimum will be about 10°C.

Surf and the Water

The surf will shrink from 3-4 feet at dawn to just 2 feet by dusk. The cross-shore wind will also be lightest in the morning, so that will definitely be the moment to seize, If it’s swimming that you’re interested in, then that early session should be pretty smooth in all areas but as it gets later in the day you will definitely want to shoot for the south coast. High water will be just 7.2m around 12:30pm.

Saturday

Weather

The wind will have perked up again on Friday night, nothing too drastic, only moderate force 4, but that will be enough to take the edge off any sunny spells that we get in the morning. Once again, the wind will drop off as we head through the afternoon, so the more plentiful sunshine should feel really pleasant at that time. As such the max temp will be a little higher, most likely 15°C but if anywhere is likely to sneak up to 16°C then it will be the south coast cliff paths and beaches.

Surf and the Water

1 foot surf through most of the day, possibly picking up to a healthy 2 feet in the evening though. The wind will be cross-shore on the west coast again, but hopefully it won’t be strong enough to ruin the evening surf if we are blessed with any. Once again, the smoothest water for swimmers will be found along the south coast. Low water will be at 7:40am. High water will be about 7m at 1:50pm.

Sunday

Weather

Some sunny spells but probably a cloudier day than Saturday on the whole. Winds will be nice and light though, just force 2-3 WNW’ly though the daytime, so feeling nice and comfortable, with max temps of 14-15°C in most parts of the island and a healthy 16°C in Town. Winds will get stronger overnight though (fresh force 5 NW’ly) and there will probably be a few showers around midnight, so you might here a bit of pitter patter on your windows if you’re not the deepest of sleepers.

Surf and the Water

The surf will stay around 2 feet, maybe allowing the odd 3 foot set to sneak through as the tide pushes up towards high (7.3m at 3:15pm). Winds will be onshore on the west coast, but not strong enough to really mess up the surf. Likewise, with such light winds the swimming conditions should be nice in all areas. Low water will be around 9am.

Next Week

Weather

We will have a NNW’ly flow for the entire week, so that’s never likely to bring particularly warm air. However, there should be plenty of sunshine and just the chance of catching a couple of brief showers here and there. The winds will be pretty perky Monday to Wednesday (mostly fresh force 5), so the temperature will only rise to a chilly feeling 13°C each day and then fall to about 9 or 10°C each night. Moving on to Thursday and Friday, there won’t be any proper change of air mass, but it looks as though winds will fall almost flat calm, meaning that the sunshine will actually have the chance to cook up an extra couple of degrees for the islands, so we are probably going to peak at 14°C on Thursday afternoon, then 15°C or maybe even 16°C on Friday afternoon.

Surf and the Water

The surf should be 2-3 feet on Monday, but just 1-2 feet through the rest of the week. Swimming conditions will always be smoothest along the south coast, but the other coasts will also be nice whenever the winds are lightest. Tides will be low in the late mornings Monday and Tuesday, then around lunchtime through the rest of the week. Highs will be in the late afternoons Monday and Tuesday, then it will be around dawn and dinner time through the rest of the week (steadily increasing in size from roughly 8m to 9m).

The next forecast update will be on Sunday…
