Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 14 May 2023

Monday

Weather

A grey, murky and wet start to the working week. However, by late morning Monday, we should be trading that filth for some long-lasting sunshine. The visibility should become excellent too, because the air will be on the chilly side (and the word on the street is that people are already disappointed May’s performance so far). So yes it will look gorgeous but the 14°C max temperature and the force 4-5 N’ly wind will certain force you to keep your jumpers on. Head to the south coast for some relative warmth.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be sloppy and choppy but breaking consistently at 2-3 feet, it is likely to be the best surf of the week, at least if you are hoping to ride a shortboard. As with the past few days (and the next few days), the smoothest water for swimmers will generally be found along the south coast. Low water will be around 10:15am and high water will be around 4:20pm (7.7m).

Tuesday and Wednesday

Weather

Tuesday will carry on as Monday left off, with force 4-5 N’ly winds ensuring that the bountiful sunshine never gets quite as warm as we’d like it to. The afternoon will see a wind reduction to force 3-4, so the 14°C max temp will at least feel a bit more comfortable. Moving on to Wednesday, the northerly wind will ease further, wafting in at just force 2-3, so on that occasion the sunshine (equally bountiful) should nudge the mercury right up to the 15°C mark. Don’t forget your sun cream if you’re working outdoors, as the UV index will peak at 6 around lunchtime, so it really won’t take long to get a little sunburnt.

Surf and the Water

The surf, although becoming cleaner as the wind decreases through each day, will become disappointingly small… 2 feet on Tuesday morning, dropping to 1 foot in the afternoon, then falling pretty much flat through Wednesday. Swimming conditions will be best along the south coasts during the mornings, and generally better on all coasts during the afternoons. Tides will be high around dawn and dinner time (8.2m and 8.6m respectively). Low water will be at 11:15am and midday respectively.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

Winds will veer NE’ly and stay light force 2-3 through Thursday and the majority of Friday, although it does look as though it might increase to force 4 on Friday evening, just as you’re thinking about firing up the BBQ. Skies will be a mixed bag of bubbly cloud and sunshine throughout these two days, but none of that cloud should ever develop enough to produce any showers, so we are essentially looking at great weather for outdoor sports, drying laundry, mowing lawns etc etc. Temperatures should sneak ever so slightly higher than through the first half of the week, likely peaking between 15 and 16°C each day.

Surf and the Water

Pretty much flat surf though these two days, unless we are blessed with some rideable 1-2 foot humps on Friday late afternoon/evening. With such light winds, the conditions for swimming and paddle-boarding will be lovely on all coasts, although there is a suggesting of slightly stronger NW’ly breezes on Friday evening, in which case the south and east will be the clear favourites. Low water will be around lunchtime and high water will be around breakfast time and dinner time (generally around or slightly less than 9m)

The Weekend

Weather

With winds being mostly moderate force 4 NE’ly, the weather will stay dry with plenty of sunshine and a scattering of bubbly cloud, so temperatures are likely to peak between 15 and 16°C, just like the previous couple of days. There’s a slim chance that the wind will fall lighter and allow the mercury to nudge up to 17°C, but it will most probably just remain comfortably average, with the warmest areas being on the south coast, where you can find a little more shelter from the breeze.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be about 2 feet on Saturday, possibly picking up to 3 or even 4 feet for Sunday. The breeze still coming from a NE’ly quadrant, so swimming conditions will be most consistently smooth along the south coast, but other areas will be quite nice when winds are lightest. Tides will be high around breakfast time and in the evenings (still around or slightly less than 9m). Low water will be in the early afternoons.

The next forecast update will be on Tuesday or Wednesday…
