Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 17 May 2023

Thursday

Weather

Lots of high cloud so the sunshine will be very hazy and the sky will be a milky shade of blue. However, it will still be dry, with the NNE’ly breeze just as light as on Wednesday and the temperature just as high (15-16 for the max°C). Head to the southeast of the Island (between Petit Port and Icart Point) for the warmest feelings.

Surf and the Water

The surf will be virtually flat but the swimming and paddle-boarding conditions will be good on all coasts, especially the south. Big tidal movements, with a lunchtime low and two highs… 8.8m around 6:30am and 8.9m around 6:45 pm.

Friday

Weather

There’s a slim chance of a spot of rain around dawn and perhaps the lightest of showers in the early afternoon. This does all suggest that it will be much cloudier than the previous days, and indeed it will be to some extent. However, it certainly won’t be a write-off of a day, because there will be plenty of sunny interludes, most likely in the late morning and then again in the late afternoon and evening. This will allow temperatures to peak at around 15°C and the breeze will only be a light force 2-3 N’ly, so everywhere should feel comfortable but the south coast will be particularly peasant again.

Surf and the Water

A new swell will pulse through around 2 feet on the sets (maybe with the odd lucky 3-footer) and some pretty lengthy lulls in between. Conditions should be nice and clean, because the cross-shore wind will only be light. Swimming and paddle-boarding will once again be good on all coasts but especially the south. The tide will be low at lunchtime again, and the highs will be 8.9m around 7am and 9m 7:30pm.

The Weekend

Weather

We will say goodbye to the slightly cloudier skies of Thursday and Friday, and bounce back to the brilliant sunshine that we enjoyed in the earlier part of the week. However, this will be accompanied by a slight increase in the NNE’ly wind, blowing moderate force 4 for the majority of the time, so there isn’t likely to be a jump in the temperature, probably peaking at 16°C each day but maybe just sneaking up to 17°C on Sunday if we’re lucky. Once again, with that wind still blowing from the same direction, the south cost will be the best place to feel toasty.

Surf and the Water

The swell will be around 2-3 feet on Saturday, then 1-2 feet on Sunday. Both days a little choppy due to their being a little more strength in the cross-shore wind. Once again, however, the south coast should be nice and smooth for swimming. Tides will be high around breakfast time and in the evenings (still around or slightly less than 9m). Low water will be in the early afternoons.

Next Week

Weather.

A very similar week to the one we’ve just had. Winds blowing from a NE’ly direction… moderate force 4 at times but mostly just light force 2 to 3. Sunshine a plenty and almost zero likelihood of any showers. Excellent for drying the laundry, mowing the lawn and for all manor of outdoor activity. Temperatures peaking in the mid to high teens each day and falling to about 10°C each night

Surf and the Water

The surf should be 2-3 feet through the first half of the week, then 1-2 feet through the second. Winds will remain cross-shore on the west coast, so surfers will have to pounce on the moments when winds are light in order to find the cleanest conditions. Swimmers will continue to find the smoothest water along the south coast. Tidal movements will be medium-large at the start of the week (with highs in the mid-mornings and around dusk) becoming small by the end of the week (with highs in the late mornings).

The next forecast update will be on Saturday morning…
