Tuesday and Wednesday
Weather
There will be quite a lot of high cloud through Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. That’s going to make the sunshine a bit soft and muted through those hours. However through the rest of the time, the sun will be simply blazing against royal blue skies. The UV index will peak at 6 around lunchtime each day, so don’t forget your cream and your hats etc, especially if you’re working outdoors all day. Winds will continue to blow from this repetitive NNE’ly direction… light force 3 to moderate force 4 for most of the time. Just dropping to light force 2 for those special moments around early and late. Max temps between 16 and 17°C in most parts of the island, but likely reach 18°C along the south coast. Overnight min temps between 10 and 11°C.
Surf and the Water
It’s all about trying to find the moments when the cross-shore winds are lighter and the waves (generally 1-3 feet and pretty gutless) are slightly bigger. If I was to pick a moment then it would probably be Tuesday late evening, but even this is looking pretty small and sloppy. Swimmers and paddle-boarders will find the best conditions along the south coast in general. However, there will be some smooth water at the northern ends of the west-coast bays around the times of high water… mid-morning and around dusk.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
The repetitive combo of sunshine and NE’ly winds continues. The only day to day differences are really in the strength of that wind, in this case we are looking at moderate force 4 through the majority of Thursday, then sprucing right up to fresh force 5 on Friday (so you will need to seek out some shelter if you’ve got hot plans to launch the weekend with a barbecue). Temperatures likely climbing to between 18 and 19°C on Thursday and then dropping back to 17°C as those winds get fruity on Friday.
Surf and the Water
The winds will continue to be annoyingly brisk and cross-shore for surfers. However, the waves should increase slightly in size… from a rather pathetic 1 foot on Thursday to a more convincing 2 feet on Friday. As with the previous days, the smoothest water for swimmers will be along the south coast and in those sheltered nooks of the west-coast bays. High tides will be 10:45am on Thursday and 11:30am on Friday… nice and small 7.2m and 6.8m respectively. Low tides will be in the late afternoons.
The Weekend
Weather
Once again the weather will be dry and mostly sunny, with the wind sticking rigidly to its NE’ly direction. The only daily differences will be the strength of the wind and the effect that it has on temperature. Saturday will see a gradual relaxation from fresh force 5 to moderate force 4, then Sunday will hopefully see a further relaxation from moderate force 4 to light force 3. The temperature therefore likely to be a degree higher on Sunday (19°C versus 18°C).
Surf and the Water
Two more days of poor quality surf, with the swell actually diminishing to near flat, and the cross-shore wind really ruining whatever swell does manage to sneak through. Kite-surfers will probably have a bit of a blast on Saturday though. Swimming conditions will continue to be best along the south coast and in those few sheltered west-coast nooks. Tidal movements will be tiny, with lunchtime highs of just 6.5m.
The next forecast update will be on Wednesday…
