Thursday
Weather
A bit of a cloudy day, but there should be plenty of cracks in the cloud for the sunbeams to poke through. Winds will be a bit lighter than on Wednesday (just a light force 2-3 NW’ly), so it’s going to feel really comfortable, especially along the south and east coasts. Max temps should be 18-19°C in most northern and western areas, but we should easily climb to 20°C in the south and east, maybe even 21°C in Town.
Surf and the Water
Flat surf but probably the best day on all coasts (at least in this particular forecast) for swimming, kayaking or paddle-boarding. Tides will be high at 9:10am and 9:20pm (8.3m and 8.5m respectively).
Friday
Weather
Much clearer skies and therefore much brighter and more plentiful sunshine. Funnily enough however, the temperature won’t climb any higher. That’s because the force 3-4 NW’ly breeze will pull slightly cooler air. South and east coasts will feel noticeably warmer, so it will be worth making the effort to head over that way. Don’t get caught out if you’re in one of the cooler spots though, the UV index will be at least 7 at its peak (around lunchtime) so you will definitely want to protect your skin.
Surf and the Water
Flat surf again, but the swimming conditions will be nice along the south and east coasts, especially around the 8.2m high tide at 9:45am. Low water will be at 3:50pm.
The Weekend
Weather
The news really isn’t great I’m afraid, only 8 days after the last deep low brought much wetter and windier conditions than we tend to expect in July, here comes another one. The low centre will be just off the west coast of Ireland at the start of Saturday, then it will deepen as it traverses the UK to be just east of Yorkshire by the end of Sunday. If you can picture the swirl of isobars on the weather chart, then I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that we expect fresh force 5 to strong force 6 SW’ly winds and a scattering of showers or longer spells of rain. We might see a little bit of sunshine on Saturday morning and then we should see a greater amount on Sunday afternoon, but for all the time in between we can expect skies to be decidedly grey. Temperatures will be respectable enough 20-21°C, but you will definitely need to find some decent shelter to feel comfortable. Town and Fermain will be best of all, but there will be a couple of cosy corners along the west and north coasts too.
Surf and the Water
Great conditions for windsurfing and kite-surfing, and we should have some fun 2-4 foot lumps for surfers to wriggle around on. Swimming conditions will be best of all along the east coast, but high water should offer a few sheltered nooks along the west and north coasts too… 10:15am on Saturday and 10:45am on Sunday (both tides around 8.1m in height).
Next Week
Weather
Oh dear, it’s not looking great I’m afraid. More wet and windy weather throughout the week. The weekends low-pressure system will clear off through Monday and Tuesday, leaving us in a force 4-5 but probably dry NW’ly through those days. Unfortunately, hot on its heels, another low pressure system will develop over Southern Britain through Wednesday and Thursday, giving us at least two days of force 4-5 WSW’ly winds and frequent downpours. Temperatures will carry on around average, but it certainly won’t feel very special, except for the briefest of moments in the most sheltered nooks and crannies.
Surf and the Water
A great week for windsurfers and kite-surfers. As ever, swimmers will have some options but they might not be on the doorstep… a high tide trip to a sheltered nook will be required. Surfers will not be blessed with anything classic, but at this time of year, a daily dose of surfable 2-3 foot onshore mush is a whole lot better than nothing. Tides will be low around breakfast time and dinner time. High tides will be around lunchtime, varying between 7m and 7.8m.
The next forecast update will be on Friday…
