Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 30 August 2023

Thursday

Weather

The wind will start off S’ly and then veer WSW’ly by lunchtime, this wind-change will be due to a soggy weather front moving across the islands, bringing a murky mix of rain, drizzle and mist. The afternoon should become drier and perhaps even quite bright for a time, before some fairly heavy rain arrives late evening. Those winds will be moderate force 4 for the most part, perhaps occasionally amping up to fresh force 5, so the sheltered east will offer the only hope of feeling warm and comfortable. Town should scoop the top temperature of 20°C.

Surf and the Water

Flat surf through most of the day but maybe (if we’re really lucky) a slight increase to 1-2 feet in the evening. The west coast currently looks pretty good for kite-surfing but for swimming it would definitely be best to go to the east coast. Tides will be pretty massive, with highs of 9.4m around 7:40am and then 9.9m around 8pm.

Friday

Weather

Around dawn, the W’ly wind will be as strong as on Thursday (force 4-5), but it will quickly weaken, until by lunchtime it’s only light force 3 and then by evening only light force 2. The weather should be mostly (if not entirely) dry, but the skies will be a bit on the cloudy side. That said, much of that cloud will be wispy high cirrus, so it will be bright enough for temperatures to climb a degree higher than on Thursday… so this means we should peak at 19-20°C in most parts of the Island, but at 21°C in Town.

Surf and the Water

3 foot surf, gradually cleaning up as the onshore wind falls light by the afternoon. Early swimmer will be best to head east, but all coasts should be good for those who want to wait a bit later. Tides will be even more massive, with highs of 9.8m around 8:20am and 10.2m around 8:40pm.

The Weekend

Weather

Dry and mostly sunny, but the NE’ly wind might be a little too keen at times… mostly force 3-4 but every now and then it might crank up to fresh force 5. Max temps should be around 21°C on Saturday and 22°C on Sunday (generally feeling warmest on the south coast, especially around Torteval and St Pierre du Bois).

Surf and the Water

Cleanish 2-3 foot surf at the start of Saturday, steadily reducing through the weekend, to 1-2 feet and becoming rather choppy as the cross-shore wind increases. Swimming conditions will always be best along the south coast, but there will also be some smooth west coast nooks when the tide gets high. Those highs being around breakfast time and dusk… ranging between 9.8m and 10.2m.

Next Week

Weather

We should maintain daily max temps of around 22°C, as we hang on to the brisk NE’ly airflow in the first half of the week and then switch to a gentle NW’ly in the second half. The weather should be mostly (if not entirely) dry and most days should have a healthy dose of sunshine. Everything that you would expect for the grand return to school. As with the weekend, the south coast should always feel the most comfortable and warm.

Surf and the Water

For the west coast, the wind will always be cross-shore or onshore but it will vary in strength from day to day, so the quality of the surf will vary accordingly. The waves should consistently be there though, thanks to the presence of some ex tropical storms on the other side of the Atlantic. Sometimes the waves will only be 1-2 feet, sometimes they could be 4 feet or more, but there should always be a bit of power and push in them. High tides will be in the late mornings through the first half of the week and they will be at lunchtime through the second half of the week. Monday’s high tide will still be pretty big at 9.4m, but they will get smaller and smaller each day, such that Friday’s high is only 6.6m.

The next forecast update will be on Saturday morning…
