Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 04 September 2023

Tuesday

Weather

Sunny and hot, it’s almost as simple as that. Just a little wind and temperature for you though… E’ly force 3-4 in the morning, veering SE’ly and maintaining that strength through the afternoon. This will lift temperatures right up to 26°C by mid-afternoon, and then it might just extend to 27°C late afternoon, due to the fact that it takes a couple of hours for Normandy’s hottest air to make the journey. Overnight temperatures will remain high, making it all a bit stick and uncomfortable… 18°C or maybe even 19°C for the minimum temperature, so make sure you keep a bottle of water on your bedside table.

Surf and the Water

Another pulse of very long distance swell (courtesy of ex-hurricane Franklin) will surge up and down our beaches, bringing very similar waves to what we saw on Monday… 2-4 feet with long lulls punctuated by powerful sets. The west and north coasts will have the smoothest water for swimmers, due to the offshore wind. However, that wind and the enhanced currents associated with the powerful swell, will mean that swimmers should take extra care to stay close to shore and to play safe. Tides will be 8.6m high around 11am and then low at 5:15pm.

Wednesday

Weather

The breeze will virtually disappear (just a light force 2 NE’ly) but the skies will be much cloudier than the previous days. However, this will still allow it to become rather hot (with a probable max of 25°C). This is because the majority of the cloud will be very high, which means that it will still be bright and the UV index will still be high enough (about 5) to get a little sunburnt. The most uncertain aspect of the forecast is whether or not we will be hit by any of the thundery showers that make their way from France to England. There is a tiny chance of a rumble and a downpoor in the late afternoon and evening, followed by a much greater chance around midnight or soon after. However, there is still a significant chance that they will all pass by to the west of us, leaving us bone-dry (sweat excluded) with minimum overnight temperatures of 18-19°C again.

Surf and the Water

Another day of solid 3-4 foot surf on the west coast. A little more consistent on this occasion though, in other words the lulls won’t last so long and the larger sets won’t be quite so sneaky and surprising. All coasts will be good for swimming, kayaking and paddle-boarding. Tides will be roughly 8m high at 11:30am, and then low at 5:50pm.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

Very similar to Wednesday, except for the reduced risk of a thundery shower. If such a thing were to occur then it would only be around dawn on Thursday or perhaps very late on Friday night. However, we are really just looking at two more days of light force 2 NE’ly breezes, maintaining hot and humid conditions… daytime maxima of around 25°C and overnight minima of about 18°C. Weather-wise we will probably maintain that ceiling of high cloud, which will only allow a few spells of hazy sunshine to penetrate. There is one new edition though, and that is the likelihood of being temporarily engulfed by a wandering bank of sea-fog. Rather like showers, fog banks can be rather erratic in their movement, so it is very uncertain at this early stage. Should one roll in, then the windward coastal areas (north and east) will obviously be most at risk, so the airport is relatively well placed on this occasion, and is unlikely to suffer much disruption.

Surf and the Water

Tiny little tidal movements, with lunchtime highs of 7.2m and 6.6m respectively. Low water will be around breakfast time and dinner time. Swimmers will enjoy two fantastic days on all coasts because the winds will be so light. As for the surf conditions, they will be lovely and clean but rather microscopic compared to the first half of the week… roughly 2 feet on Thursday morning, dropping to 1 foot in the afternoon, and holding around that size through Friday.

The Weekend

Weather

Winds will likely veer E’ly, bringing drier air and therefore brighter sunshine. Temperatures likely peaking in the high twenties. A potentially fantastic weekend for weddings, parties and barbecues etc, but the nights are really starting to draw in now that we are so close to the Autumnal Equinox. Sunset will be at 7:37pm and 7:35pm respectively.

Surf and the Water

We might just be in for a little pulse of swell, increasing wave-heights from near flat to around 2 feet and super-clean. Tidal movements will be tiny, with mid-late morning lows and the mid-late afternoon highs (roughly 6.4m and 6.6m respectively).

The next forecast update will be on Thursday evening…
