Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 12 September 2023

Wednesday

Weather

Apart from a change of wind direction (force 3-4 NNE’ly rather than WNW’ly), we are looking at an extremely similar day to Tuesday… some cloudy spells with the chance of one or two drizzly showers in the morning, some decent sunshine by lunchtime, this increasing through the rest of daylight hours. All resulting in a daytime max of about 20-21°C (maybe 22°C on the south coast beaches) and an overnight minimum of about 14°C.

Surf and the Water

The surf won’t be much bigger than flat and the cross-shore wind will ruin what little there is. Swimming conditions will be lovely on the south coast though (and at the northern end of the west-coast bays). Tides will be highs at 6:40am and 6:50pm (8.1m and 8.5m respectively). Low tide will be at 1pm.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

A couple of dry and mostly sunny days, with lighter winds than on Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in slightly higher temperatures and certainly a less autumnal feeling. Thursday will have a very light (force 1-2 NW’ly breeze which means that temperatures should widely climb to 21-22°C and maybe go right up to 23°C in Town. Friday will have a force 2-3 E’ly breeze, probably resulting in the same temperatures as on Thursday, but with the highest temperature (23°C) being found in the southwestern Parishes.

Surf and the Water

The surf will only be 1-2 feet at the absolute most, but it will be lovely and clean, so kiddies and longboarders might find a little satisfaction. Great swimming conditions on all coasts on Thursday and then especially on the west coast through Friday. Tidal movements will be fairly large though, with breakfast and dinner-time highs (ranging between 8.5m and 9m). Low tides will be at lunchtime.

The Weekend

Weather

On both days, we can be certain of some heavy showers, perhaps becoming prolonged and thundery. The uncertainty is about precisely when this will happen… during the first of the day or the second. During the dry hours, whenever they may be, skies will be mostly cloudy and the force 3-4 NE’ly breeze will bring humid air, making it feel rather warm, even though the temperature won’t climb any higher than 21 or 22°C. Although it’s very uncertain just how much rainfall we will see across the weekend, it is worth being aware that it could be enough to cause some localised flooding. At this range the most likely total would be a pretty harmless 5-10mm per day, but there is a suggestion that these figures could be quadrupled. Keep an eye out for my next update regarding this.

Surf and the Water

Winds could be strong enough for windsurfers and kite-surfers to get a much needed hit (especially on Sunday). If surfers are going to also get lucky then it looks most likely on Sunday. However, it looks as though the proper hurricane swell won’t arrive until Monday or possibly not until Tuesday. Tidal movements will remain large through the weekend, with highs around breakfast time and shortly after dusk (all roughly 9m). Low tides will be in the mid-afternoons.

Next Week

Weather

I’m afraid it’s going to feel like Autumn good and proper. A full week of WSW’ly winds... force 4 at their lightest and force 6 at their strongest. This will bring plenty of showers or longer spells of rain or drizzle. There will be some good chunks of dry time too, some of it sunny, some of it cloudy, but you will generally have to go to Town in order to feel warm… daily max temps typically around 20°C, nightly min temps typically around 16°C.

Surf and the Water

The surf should certainly become bigger and stronger, thanks to a number of tropical storms across the Atlantic. However, it currently looks as though the cross-shore winds will make a mess of it all. It should still be lots and lots of fun though, whilst the water is warm, and it should also be a bit of a blast for windsurfers and kite-surfers. Tidal movements will be medium in size, with highs in the mid to late mornings and lows in the mid to late afternoons.

The next forecast update will be on Thursday evening…
