Thursday
Weather
Winds will be mercifully light compared to Wednesday, but there will still be the odd gusty moment when the heavy (possibly thundery) showers sweep through. Fortunately, however, there will be some long spells of sunshine in between the showers during the morning, as well as a few shorter sunny interludes during the afternoon. The air will be pretty cool compared to Wednesday though, because it will be brought to us from a WSW’ly direction rather than a SSW’ly. The max temp will only be about 17°C in the majority of locations and about 18°C in the warmest parts of St Peter Port.
Surf and the Water
Rather choppy but reasonably good 3-5 foot waves on the west coast, as well as some nice swimming conditions on the east coast (providing there aren’t any thunderstorms at the time). Tides will be high at 10:40am (7.9m) and low at 5pm.
Friday
Weather
On the up- side, the showers will be lighter and far less frequent than on Thursday. However, on the down-side, the max temperature will be the lowest that we’ve had for a while… just 15-16°C in most parts of the Island and about 17°C in Town. Winds will be a bit fresh and perky… force 4-5 WNW’ly, so the most sheltered cliffs and beaches will be along the south and east coasts.
Surf and the Water
Slightly bigger waves (4-6 feet) but they will be more choppy I’m afraid. East coast swimming conditions will be as clean as ever though, and some south coast nooks will be quite smooth too. Tides will be high at 11:20am (7.5m) and low at 5:40pm.
The Weekend
Weather
Saturday (the day of the Autumnal Equinox) will be cloudier than Friday, but it will also be warmer and it should stay completely dry… the wind easing to light force 3 and backing to a SW’ly direction. Sunday should then be the sunniest weekend day, with a fresh force 5 S’ly wind bringing warm air back to the Island. Max temps 18-19°C on Saturday, then 20-21°C on Sunday.
Surf and the Water
Semi-clean 3-4 foot surf on Saturday, followed by much cleaner and perhaps much bigger surf on Sunday, this swell coming from Ex-hurricane Nigel, so the size and the timing is a little uncertain, but we can be sure that there will be plenty of power. Swimming conditions will probably be best at Pemboke and in the most sheltered west-coast nooks. High tides will be around lunchtime. Low tides around breakfast time and dinner time.
Next Week
Weather
A little light rain is likely on Monday morning but the rest of Monday and Tuesday are looking dry and comfortable, with light SSW’ly breezes. Wednesday will then probably see a strengthening of that wind to fresh force 5, followed by a change to a cooler WSW’ly flow. This will probably remain with us for the rest of the week, brining sunshine and isolated showers. Daily max temps, most likely around 19-21°C in the first half of the week, then 17-19°C in the second.
Surf and the Water
The surf prospects look good through the first half of the week, with strong medium sized waves and winds blowing almost offshore. The second half of the week looks likely to become choppier but remain fun-size and rideable. Swimming conditions will generally be best on the north and west coasts in the first half of the week, before switching to the east coast in the second. Tides will become big, as we go into the first spring-tide phase after the Autumnal Equinox… increasing day by day from roughly 7m high on Monday’s high to roughly 10m on Friday’s.
The next forecast update will be on Friday or Saturday…
