Saturday
Weather
A mix of cloud and sunshine (the best of that sunshine being in the afternoon. From time to time the cloud could squeeze out a brief shower… only spits and spots so it shouldn’t affect your ability to dry the laundry or to go for a decent walk. It’s going to feel chilly though, compared to the last few days when that warm southerly wind was blowing. This time we have a moderate force 4 NW’ly and we aren’t likely to see any higher temperatures than 14-15°C. (overnight min temps 9-10°C)
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be about 4 feet at dawn, dropping to 2 feet by dusk. Choppy all day though. For smooth water, the south and east coasts will be best, so those areas will be best for swimmers, especially around dawn and dusk when the tide is relatively high… first high water 7:15am, low water 1:30pm, second high water 7:30pm.
Sunday
Weather
Another mixed bag of grey sky and blue… the sunshine often made hazy by high cirrus cloud. No chance of showers beyond about 8 or 9 in the morning, so another generally dry day for hanging the laundry etc. The wind will be lighter than Saturday though, just a light force 3 NNE’ly, gradually veering ENE’ly but not strengthen to moderate force 4 until dusk. Max temps just 13-14°C and min temps just 8-9°C.
Surf and the Water
The surf could be 1-2 feet and just about worth riding your longboard in the early morning. It’s looking pretty much flat by the end of the day though. Swimmers will find the smoothest waters along the south coast early morning, gradually switching to the east coast by the end of the day. The high tides will be around 7:45am and 8pm (9m and 9.1m), then low water will be around 2pm
Monday and Tuesday
Weather
Both days should be dry throughout, but the sunshine will be very soft and weak due to the cirrus cloud being pretty thick. The most noticeable feature will be the biting E’ly wind… blowing at force 5-6 for the majority of the time, so adding a significant wind-chill effect to the already to the already chilly air. Max temps will be about 14-15°C but it will feel more like 9-10°C.
Surf and the Water
Flat surf I’m afraid. As for the swimming opportunities… it’s really going to have to be high tide along the east coast, when the sea walls will offer a teeny bit of shelter… 8:15am on Monday, then 8:45am on Tuesday.
Wednesday to Friday
Weather
This will be the wet end of the week, with about 4-12mm of rain expected each day… starting off around breakfast time on Wednesday. Winds will be almost as strong as on Monday and Tuesday, but they will start to blow from a SE’ly direction, actually bringing slightly warmer air to the Island. Obviously, it’s not going to feel too special because the weather will have taken such a downturn. However, the temps should slip back up to about 16°C by day and 12-13°C by night, so if you had been tempted to turn your heaters on then hopefully that temptation should subside again.
Surf and the Water
Wednesday and Thursday look like another couple of flat days for surfers, However, we should have some nice clean surf on Friday. It’s a long way off but my early estimate is 3-5 feet with a reasonable amount of power. Swimmers will still want to continue targeting the high tide, in order to get as much shelter as possible from those west-coast sea-walls. High tides will be in the mid-mornings (8.8m, 8.5m and 8.1m respectively). Low tides will be in the late afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Monday morning…
