Wednesday
Weather
Warmer air over the Islands today… 17-18°C for the max. However, with strong force 6-7 winds (SE’ly until mid-afternoon, then SW’ly until late evening) and about 15mm of rainfall, the temperature is the last thing that anyone will be thinking of. By dusk, the rain won’t be persistent any more, but showery… coming and going throughout the night, with some lengthy dry and possibly clear interludes. Min temp overnight… 15°C.
Surf and the Water
Clean 1-2 foot surf, just the slim chance of the odd 3-footer slipping through by evening. The offshore wind will be very strong though, making it better suited to windsurfing than surfing. Swimmers would probably be best off giving it a miss on this occasion. If there is a time/place to go in then it would be along the north or west coast on the dead high tide… (9m at :15am). Low tide will be at 3:30pm.
Thursday and Friday
Weather
With some very low pressure over the area at the moment, the air is rising readily into tall cumulonimbus clouds, bringing occasional heavy downpours and even the slight chance of some thunder. In between these showers, there should be some bright or sunny intervals. Furthermore, now that the sun stays pretty low in the sky, we could be treated to some spectacular rainbows at just about any time of day. Thursday’s wind will be S’ly fesh force 5 for the most part, then Fridays will just be variable light force 2 to 3. Similar temperatures on both days… 16-17°C for the maxima and 12-13°C for the minima. Friday should feel more comfortable during the dry time, due to the lightness of the wind. However, that will also mean that the showers are much slower to move through, so the puddles could end up being much larger.
Surf and the Water
Clean conditions for surfers on both days, but with a major difference in size from day to day… 2-3 feet on Thursday, jumping up to about 6-8 feet on Friday. Windsurfers and kite-surfers will prefer Thursday though, especially during the morning. As for the tides… the highs will be in the mid-mornings (8.7m and 8.3m respectively) and the lows will be in the late afternoons.
The Weekend
Weather
Still a decidedly unsettled picture… Saturday’s NW’ly wind will be on the strong side (mainly fresh force 5) and Sunday’s SW’ly won’t be much gentler. Both days will be showery, but it certainly looks as though the bulk of these showers will occur on Saturday, so it might be wise to steer your indoor activities towards Saturday and your outdoor plans towards Sunday. Max temps 15-16°C, min temps 11-12°C.
Surf and the Water
The surf will still be reasonably clean at times (mainly on Sunday), but it won’t be as big as on Friday… 5-6 feet on Saturday, then 3-4 feet on Sunday. Swimmers will find that they have more options though, with the south coast looking particularly good on Saturday and then the north and west coasts looking best on Sunday. As for the tides… the highs will be around 11am and midday respectively, and the lows will be around 5:30pm and 7pm respectively.
Next Week
Weather
A standard Autumnal week, with low pressure systems following a traditional track across northwest Britain and on towards Norway, meaning that we maintain a mild but occasionally wet SSW’ly flow through the majority of the week (mostly force 4-5, perhaps occasionally stepping down to force 3 or stepping up to force 6). Temperatures should typically peak around 16°C during the days, then only fall to around 12°C during he nights.
Surf and the Water
The surf is looking mostly clean and medium in size (generally 2-3 feet at its smallest, 4-5 feet at its biggest). Swimming conditions will be most consistently good on the east coast, but often good on the west and north coasts too. Tidal movements will be very small at the beginning of the week and quite large by the end of the week… lows in the mornings and highs in the afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
