Friday
Weather
A mix of showers and bright or sunny spells. The showers will still be on the heavy side, but they will be fewer and further between than on Thursday, meaning that the brighter skies will be more prevalent. The main improvement however, will obviously be the loss of that ridiculous wind. It won’t be as calm as we might wish for in a perfect world, but in the current context I’m sure that we will feel very grateful for this force 5 W’ly. Town should be the most comfortable area, with a top temperature of 14°C. Most other areas will only peak at 13°C. Overnight, the wind will start to blow a bit harder… force 6 to 7, coming from a S’ly direction, but that’s as far as it will go (it certainly won’t be anything like storm Ciaran).
Surf and the Water
The 8-10 foot west-coast surf will be marginally cleaner in the morning than the afternoon, but it will all be on the lumpy bumpy side. However, if you’re a windsurfer or a kite-surfer, then you will find it to be the later the better. Tides will be high (roughly 8.2m) around 9:30am and low around 4pm.
Saturday
Weather
Not only will the wind have strengthened on Friday night, but a spell of heavy rain will have set in, meaning that there will be some pretty whopping puddles at dawn. However, it will pretty soon fragment into an alternating pattern of bright spells and showers, meaning that people should hopefully find some opportune moments to sneak off to the shops or to tidy up their gardens and driveways. Winds will be much stronger than ideal (force 6-7 SW’ly) but as I said for Friday night, this certainly won’t be anywhere near as severe as storm Ciaran. Max temps 13-14°C again, but only feeling comfortable in the most sheltered nooks and crannies.
Surf and the Water
Slightly cleaner surf, especially during the afternoon… still in the 6-8 foot range along the west coast. Great windsurfing conditions (for experts). High tide will be roughly 7.7m at 10am, then low tide will be at 4pm.
Sunday
Weather
Perhaps slightly fewer showers than on Saturday, likely separated by slightly longer bright spells. However, we will still be pestered by a force 6-7 wind, so the 13-14°C will still feel on the chilly side. This time the wind direction will be NW’ly in the morning and then W’ly in the afternoon. Town and Fermain will be the most consistently sheltered areas, but there will also be some south-coast shelter in the morning, at the likes of Petit Bot, Saints Bay and Moulin Huet.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be massive (12-15 feet) but it will be very choppy all day. There might just be a cleanish 6 foot wave to be found along the south coast early morning, or along the north coast in the afternoon, but overall it’s looking like a better day for windsurfers than anybody else. High tide will be about 7m at roughly 11am. Low tide will be at 5:40pm.
Next Week
Weather
Not a lot of change really. It looks as though each day will have shower or longer spells of rain#. Sure they will be separated by some bright or sunny interludes, but winds will be force 5-6 W’ly for the most part, so the 13-14°C daily maxima and the 10-11°C nightly minima won’t really feel any different from the current situation. If there is going to be a standout different day, then it currently looks as though Friday could be dry and sunny, albeit with a rather chilly NW’ly wind. However, that’s quite far into the future, so I really don’t think we should have too much faith in the forecast models for those particular details.
Surf and the Water
Wave heights should be about 6-8 feet at the start of the week, tapering off to about 4 feet by the end. It will be choppy and sloppy throughout, but it should still be fun for surfers and really fun for windsurfers. Tidal movements will be on the small side, with lows in the mornings and highs in the afternoons (just after midday on Monday, just before dusk on Friday).
The next forecast update will be on Sunday…
