Saturday
Weather
Oh yes, jump on this one… a whole day of light winds and no rain! Light force 3 WNW’ly breezes in the morning, going all calm and floppy around lunchtime, gradually changing to a moderate force SE’ly breeze by dusk. Whilst all that’s happening, we will have a mixture of cloud and sunshine overhead, the sunshine generally being skewed towards the morning and lunchtime. Things will become unsettled through the evening though, with rain setting in around dinner time and not really clearing off until sometime after midnight. It might also get a bit rattly as the SE’ly wind increases to force 5 or 6 overnight and then swings round to a SW’ly direction towards dawn. Max temp 12-13°C, min temp 9-10°C.
Surf and the Water
Some lovely clean waves from mid-morning onward. A nice manageable size too… roughly 4-5 feet, gradually dropping to 2-3 feet. Swimmers should take advantage of the light winds and maybe head to their favourite western beaches, rather than being forced to the east coast for precious shelter. Low tide will be at 11:20am and high tide will be at 5:15pm (roughly 8.6m).
Sunday
Weather
A windier day than previously anticipated… force 5-6 WSW’ly for the most part. This will bring mild air (max temp 14°C, min temp 12°C) but the weather will be rather bland… cloudy skies with spits and spots of light rain, occasionally splurging into persistent drizzle. Town and other eastern areas (such as Fermain) will be the best places to shelter from both the wind and the occasional wetness.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be 6 feet and choppy, fun for some surfers but probably most enjoyed by the windsurfers and kite-surfers. Swimmers will be seeking shelter again, mainly along the east coast, but there will be few other cosy corners such as Pembroke. Tides will be roughly 8.8m high at 5:40am and 5:50pm. Low tide will be at midday.
Monday and Tuesday
Weather
We will hang on to the strong WSW’ly airflow, but the weather story will switch to one of sunshine, showers and rainbows. Pretty much the same as the majority of recent days… generally the winds will be strong force 6 to 7 and irritatingly gusty, especially around the heaviest showers. In the positive side however, the temperature will be a few degrees higher than previous week, with mixima of between 14 and 16°C and minima of 11-13°C (depending on your precise location), so at least we’ll be able to keep the central heating to a minimum.
Surf and the Water
Choppy surf on the west coast (10+ feet on Monday and roughly 8 feet on Tuesday). The north coast will offer some cleaner waves however, which should certainly be of a surfable size on Monday, possibly too small up there on Tuesday though. As for swimming, I can’t really think of anywhere sheltered enough except Fermain. High tides will be around dawn (9.2m) and low tides will be at lunchtime.
Wednesday to Friday
Weather
The better end of the week with respect to wind and probably weather too. Winds will generally be moderate force 4 to fresh force 5 WNW’ly. It will still be a story of sunshine showers and rainbows, but the sunshine should be the dominant player, especially on Wednesday and Friday. However, at this time of year, the sunniest days are not necessarily the warmest days, so we will probably see a slight downturn in the temperature (nothing serious)… peaking daily between 12 and 14°C, and falling to between 9 and 11°C in the night time.
Surf and the Water
Messy west-coast waves… generally around 4-6 feet in height. There might be some clean south-coast action at times (mainly Friday), but obviously that will be much smaller. High tides will continue to be around breakfast time (9.1m, 9m and 8.6m respectively) and low tides will be in the early to mid-afternoons.
The next forecast update will be on Monday morning…
