Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 17 April 2024

Wednesday

Weather

The last of the really chilly days. It will be a few more days before we really substitute this polar air for something milder, but this will be the day that feels coldest due to the strongest winds and the cloudiest skies. There will be some sunny spells in the late morning and the early afternoon, but the rest of the day will be mostly cloudy. As for showers, they will be few and far between, but it looks as though we will most probably catch a few during the first half of the morning and then again towards midnight. Max daytime temp 11°C, min overnight temp 7°C.

Surf and the Water

Very messy 2-3 foot surf. Reasonably good conditions for windsurfing and kite-surfing though. Swimming conditions will most definitely be best along the south coast, but Fermain will also be pretty good. Tiny tidal movements, with a breakfast time low followed by 3pm high of only 6.2m.

Thursday and Friday

Weather

After some overnight rain, we will wake up to wet roads but the sky should be mostly clear and blue, which is how it should stay for the whole of Thursday and for much of the time on Friday too. Thursday looks like the absolute nicest day, due to the NNE’ly wind being so beautifully light… just force 2 for the majority of the day. Temperatures will only climb to between 12 and 13°C but this should feel really lovely compared to the windier days of late. Friday will not only be a little bit cloudier but the wind will be a moderate force 4 NW’ly, so you will really have to shelter in an eastern or southern location for it to feel anywhere near as comfortable as Thursday. Temperatures might actually be one degree higher though, due to the air coming from slightly warmer origins.

Surf and the Water

Any surf we see will be super-clean on Thursday but rather choppy on Friday. The size will be the problem though, because it’s unlikely to ever exceed 1 foot on Thursday and 2 feet on Friday. Swimmers can enjoy all coasts all day long on Thursday, but for Friday it will really be best to stick to the east or the south. Tides will be low in the late mornings, then 6.6m high at 4:20pm Thursday, then 7.1m high at 5pm on Friday.

The Weekend

Weather

Dry and mostly sunny. Winds will be light force 3 NE’ly for the most part, with temperatures probably peaking at 13-14°C each day. Sometimes the wind might perk up to moderate force though, which will make it feel a bit chillier, especially along the east coast. The absolute best area for weekend walks will be along the south-coast cliffs and beaches, but the rest of the Island should still be lovely and spring-like.

Surf and the Water

The surf should be reasonably clean but tiny again I’m afraid… maybe a few 2-footers on Saturday, but mostly just 1 foot or smaller on both days. Swimming conditions will be best of all along the south coast, but pretty smooth in some of the west-coast bays too. Tides will be low around midday, then 7.7m high at 5:50pm Thursday, then 8.1m high at 6:30pm on Friday.

Next Week

Weather

Likely returning to the relatively cool conditions of the week we’ve just had, with moderate N’ly or NE’ly winds brining daily maxima of between 11 and 14°C, depending on the lucky timing of sunshine. Every day should be a mixture of sunny spells and cloudy spells, many of those cloudy spells also coming with showers. Although that doesn’t sound particularly great, I can tell you that the showers will be very brief and sparse, and the south coast will always offer some comfortable shelter for a beautiful spring walk.

Surf and the Water

Spring tides, but not big ones… the highs (around breakfast time and dusk) varying between 8.4m at their smallest and 8.9m at their biggest. The surf will be very small or occasionally flat, but there will be some lovely smooth water down on the south coast for people who are keen to go swimming.

The next forecast update will be on Friday evening or Saturday morning…
