Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 25 April 2024

Thursday

Weather

The gentle WSW’ly breeze will bring a slightly more normal feeling day to the Islands. Not the most perfect weather, but one where the temperature feels as though it matches the amount of sunshine that we see (for about ten days now, it’s felt much colder than it looks). Skies will be cloudy for quite a lot of the day, with the occasional spits and spots of a passing shower. However, there will be some bright spells, perhaps the best of which coming at lunchtime, meaning that the temperature should climb to a healthy 14°C, with a UV index of 5 or 6 at that time.

Surf and the Water

Flat surf yet again, but there will be nice and smooth conditions for a cold-water dip, especially along the east coast when the water is high at somewhere like Bordeaux. High tides will be at 8:20am and at 8:30pm (roughly 8.8m). Low tide will be around 2:30pm.

Friday

Weather

Winds will be just as gentle as the previous days, perhaps even more so, but they will back to a SSW’ly orientation, meaning that the temperature has the potential to climb a degree higher. We will need a bit of well-timed sunshine for this to happen though. Currently it looks as though it will be cloudy with occasional showers until either lunchtime or early afternoon. The sooner it brightens up the higher that temperature will go. However, whatever figure between 13 and 15°C we end up with, it should feel pretty standard for April and generally comfortable for most outdoor activities.

Surf and the Water

Some clean west-coast surf developing for the evening, all being well. It all depends on the development details of a low pressure system in the nearby Atlantic. Hopefully it will increase from about 1 foot at low tide (3pm) to about 4 feet by high tide (8.7m at 9pm).

The Weekend

Weather

Saturday has been a really difficult day to forecast, and it hasn’t really become any easier. Forecast models are still changing with every update, with respect to the positioning of a low pressure system… either centred to the east of us, the west of us, or directly overhead. The latest expectation is for it to focus on Normands and dump 10-20mm of rainfall there, rather than on us. This would mean that we have a rather cloudy but mostly dry day, with gentle E’ly breezes in the morning and similarly gentle N’ly breezes in the afternoon… all leading to a max of 14-15°C. However, as I suggested, the rain, stronger winds and lower temperatures might all be destined for us rather than Normandy, so it would be wise to have a a pretty solid plan-B for the day. Either way, Sunday, after one or two early showers, should become increasingly sunny, with W’ly breezes gradually decreasing from force 4-5 at dawn to light force 3 by dusk.

Surf and the Water

Probably some surfable waves on Saturday… 2-3 feet and clean, which is quite a treat after the recent flatness. Sunday will be tiny again… just 2 feet and choppy gradually reducing to 1 foot and clean. Swimming conditions will be best in the west on Saturday, then best in the east on Sunday. High tides will be mid-morning (8.6m Saturday and 8.2m Sunday). Low tides will be in the mid-afternoons.

Next Week

Weather

Winds will generally be light SE’ly or NE’ly, bringing a mix of cloud, sunshine and a sprinkling of showers here and there (sometimes in the daytime, sometimes in the night time). The general feeling should be comfortable and pleasant… generally what we would expect for the transition from April to May. Temperatures likely peaking between 14 and 16°C each day, maybe slipping a degree or two higher when we luck into the lightest winds and the brightest sunshine.

Surf and the Water

If we do luck into any surfable waves, then they will most likely be lovely and clean. I’m pretty sure there will be the odd 1-2 foot pulse, but anything bigger than that looks unlikely. Swimming conditions should be lovely in most parts of the Island, but particularly along the west coast. Tides will be high in the middle of the day… 7.8m at their biggest (late morning Monday) and 6.9m at their smallest (lunchtime Wednesday and Thursday).

The next forecast update will be on Saturday…
