Seven day Guernsey weather forecast for 18 May 2024

Saturday

Weather

In a mostly sunny week, the cloudiest portion was probably Friday morning, but when I say that Saturday will be cloudy, it’s not quite in the same way. In this case, it is higher cloud… still grey, but with a very different texture and appearance. Much thicker cloud in this case, capable of producing some heavy showers, the question is how much of the rainfall will manage to reach the ground without evaporating. This means that the showers are a bit hard to forecast… we might just be talking about the odd spit and spot or there could be a thorough downpour. The risk period is from about 11am until dusk, but it may well end up that the majority of this time is dry. Winds will be very light (force 1-3) NE’ly in the morning, then NW’ly in the afternoon, leading to a comfortable max temperature of about 15-16°C.

Surf and the Water

The only day for a while that is really offering some rideable surf… just some clean 1-2 foot peelers, probably best around lunchtime, on the rising tide… low water will be around 10am and high water will be around 4:15pm (7.1m). Swimming will be lovely and smooth on all coasts.

Sunday

Weather

A slightly more straight forward and predictable day. No rain expected, or even just threatened. In this instance, the only thing that will spoil the sunshine, is some mist and fog patches. The fog will come in off the sea mid-Channel, meaning that the windward coasts (the north and the east and some parts of the west) will suffer the most. Further inland, because the N’ly wind will be so gentle, we will see the fog quickly burn away, because the sunshine should really take hold there, and lift the temperature quite easily to a max of 17-18°C. The loveliest area of all will be along the south coast. Don’t forget your sun-hats though, because the UV index will climb to 7 around lunchtime.

Surf and the Water

Maybe some clean 1 foot waves, but they will only really be big enough to be surfed by kids on foamies. Great swimming conditions away from the fog patches… best of all on the south coast. Low water will be around 11am and high water will be around 5pm (7.5m).

Monday and Tuesday

Weather

With low pressure over France, we will have a force 3-4 NE’ly airflow on Monday, but then as the low transfers to the North Sea on Tuesday, this will change to a N’ly. The other change will be that the French showers and thunderstorms will maintain a large distance from the Islands through Monday, but they will come close enough to possibly give us some soakings on Tuesday. Max temps should be about 18°C on Monday (warmest along the south coast), then just 16-17°C on Tuesday.

Surf and the Water

Flat surf, but lovely swimming conditions along the south coast. Low tides will be around midday. High tides will be around dawn and dinnertime (increasing incrementally from 7.6m to 8.2m).

Wednesday to Friday

Weather

Winds will be W’ly or SW’ly for the rest of the week… moderate force 4 on Wednesday and light just force 2-3 on the subsequent days. This will mean that the east coast feels a real improvement, but the rest of the Island doesn’t feel much difference from recent days. Sunshine should prevail (the only threat of a shower being a small one on Wednesday), so we should see ascending max temperatures… 16, 17 and 18°C respectively.

Surf and the Water

The surf probably won’t be entirely flat… 1-2 feet seems like a reasonable expectation. Swimmers will find the water is smoothest and loveliest along the east coast, but the other coasts should see an improvement as the onshore wind decreases through Thursday and Friday. Tides will be low at lunchtime. High tides will be around breakfast time and evening time (increasing incrementally from 8.3m to 8.6m).

The next forecast update will be on Sunday evening or Monday morning…
