Friday
Weather
Light force 2-3 SE’ly breezes will bring partly cloudy skies, with some pleasant sunshine at times. The west coast will probably see the brightest skies and therefore be the most likely area to reach 12°C, whilst most other spots only make it to 11°C. Night time temperatures will be on the low side, falling to a minimum of between 6 and 8°C, depending on the extent of the cloud cover. It will probably be too cloudy, but with virtually no wind, there is just the slimmest chance of an early season ground-frost in the coldest valleys.
Surf and the Water
Low water will be at midday, which means that both highs will be in the dark (9.3m pre-dawn and 9.4m post-dusk). The surf will be clean but pretty tiny… just a knee-high longboard/SUP wave. Swimming conditions will be good on all coasts due to the lightness of the SE’ly breeze.
Saturday
Weather
Mostly cloudy, but with a few cracks letting some brightness slip through here and there. Winds will be pretty much flat calm until late afternoon, when a light force 3 W’ly develop, then they will switch to a force 4 NW’ly during the night time, as a band of rain briefly crosses the area. Temperatures will be fairly flat through the daytime, hovering between 10 and 12°C, then dropping to about 8 or 9°C during the night time.
Surf and the Water
Probably flat for surfers, and generally super-smooth glassy conditions for swimmers and paddle-boarders… only a slight choppiness developing on the west-coast towards dusk. Tides will be high just before dawn (9.5m at 6:20am) and low at lunchtime.
Sunday
Weather
A chilly feeling NW’ly breeze, mostly moderate force 4, before backing W’ly overnight and increasing to fresh force 5. The weather will also tend to hold back until night time, with daylight hours most likely staying dry with partial sunshine, before patchy rain and drizzle develops sometime after midnight. Max temp 11-12°C, min temp only slightly lower… 9-10°C.
Surf and the Water
Sloppy choppy 1-2 foot gutless waves… pretty much unsurfable. Swimmers will find smoother water on the south and east coast. High tide will be 9.7m at 7am. Low tide will be at 1:30pm.
Next Week
Weather
Forecast models have wrestled with two possible scenarios… very cold or very windy. In the end the seem to have all iterated towards an agreed compromise, which is very windy but relatively mild on Monday and Tuesday, then a bit less windy but quite a lot colder from Wednesday onward. The first two days of the working week having strong force 6-7 W’ly winds and a lot of rain. Then the next three days having force 4-5 NW winds with occasional showers of heavy rain or hail. Temperatures will likely peak around 11-12°C on Monday and Tuesday, then only climb to about 8°C on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Surf and the Water
Choppy waves every day, at least on the west coast. There will be some times when south-coast spots might have clean rideable waves though. Only the keenest of sea-swimmers will be interested in having a dip, but there should be some smooth options on the south and east coasts if you aim for the times of high water… shifting a little each day from breakfast time on Monday to late morning by Friday (and shrinking incrementally from 9.5m on Monday to 7.4m by Friday).
The next forecast update will be on Sunday morning…
