Friday
Weather
One or two brief sunny spells, especially in the morning. Otherwise cloudy with occasional showers, gradually becoming more frequent, until they merge into persistent rain around dusk. Winds will be quite light to start, just force 3-4 WNW’ly, then they will back WSW’ly by lunchtime and strengthen to force 5-6 by dusk. Max temp around 12°C, min temp 9-10°C.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 3-4 foot for most of the day, but slightly bigger and cleaner in the first half of the morning. Conditions will generally be better for windsurfing or kitesurfing in the late morning and the afternoon. High water will be around 9:30am (8.3m). Low water will be around dusk.
The Weekend
Weather
Simply summarised as windy for all of the time, and wet for some of the time. Saturday being mostly cloudy with isolated drizzly showers… the W’ly winds gradually increasing from force 4-5 to force 6-7. Sunday will then be a story of sunny spells and occasional hail showers… the NW’ly wind blowing strong force 7 and very gusty all day. Temperatures peaking around 13°C on Saturday and then just 10°C on Sunday. The minimum temperature of 6-7°C probably coming during the hail showers on Sunday.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be 4-5 feet and choppy on Saturday, then 8-10 feet and extremely choppy on Sunday. That said, a clean and surfable wave might be available on south coast on Sunday. The east coast will be the area for our cold-water swimmers… really thinking of Fermain Bay around high tide due to its enhanced shelter. Tides will be high in the late mornings (shrinking from 7.9m on Saturday to 7.1m on Sunday).
Monday and Tuesday
Weather
An improving story, as we maintain the direction of the wind (NW’ly) but see a significant decrease in its strength… moderate force 4 by the end of Monday and then just light force 2-3 through Tuesday. Skies will be partly sunny/party cloudy both days. Showers will be very few and far between on Monday, then probably avoiding us altogether ion Tuesday. The temperature will peak around 10-11°C on Monday, then we should get up to a very pleasant 12-13°C on Tuesday.
Surf and the Water
The surf will clean up nicely as the wind reduces. However, the wave size will reduce with it… shrinking from over 6 feet on Monday morning to about 2 feet by Tuesday evening. Tides will be around midday (roughly 7m on Monday and 6.8m on Tuesday).
The Rest of Christmas Week
Weather
Mild but mostly cloudy and occasionally misty. So a grey Christmas looks far more likely than a white one. Winds will be nice and light, with soft sunshine breaking through at times, so festive walks and swims should all be relatively pleasant. The Christmas Day breeze will be a very gentle S’ly, then for Boxing Day and Friday, it will be a similarly gentle E’ly. Temperatures will generally peak around 11-12°C by day, then fall to about 8°C by night.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean west-coast surf, hopefully 2-3 feet every day. Smooth water for those festive swims too… especially at Cobo. Tides will be low around breakfast time and high in the afternoons (6.8m Christmas Day, 7m Boxing Day and 7.2m Friday).
The next forecast update will on Sunday or Monday…
