Wednesday
Weather
Grey and often drizzly, but virtually windless (only a light force 2 N’ly) and reasonably mild, with the temperature hovering around 8°C. There’s just the slimmest chance of a ray of sunshine before dusk, but it will most likely be soon after when skies start to clear. Those starry skies and light winds will lead to a fairly chilly night, with a min of around 4°C, meaning that a ground frost is not out of the question.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean but also very tiny surf. Generally around 1 foot, but probably with a few 2 foot sets for longboarders to enjoy. Swimming conditions will be good on all coasts (water temperature around 9°C at the moment. Tides will be high around 11:30am (7.1m) and low around 5:30am and 6pm.
Thursday
Weather
Sunny spells and showers all day, except mid-afternoon when a slightly longer and heavier spell of rain will affect us. Winds will not be too brutal, but they will be noticeably stronger than previous days… force 4-5 SW, possibly just pepping up to strong force 6 when that heavier rain comes along in the afternoon. Temperatures should hit 9-10°C in the late afternoon, so if you head to a particularly sheltered eastern spot, such as Fermain, then it might actually feel quite nice.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 2-3 foot surf, very missable considering how awesome it has been for the past fortnight. Windsurfers and kitesurfers will be happy though, because it’s been quite a while since they’ve had a blast. Tides will be high around 12:30pm (6.8m) and low around 6:30am and 7pm.
Friday
Weather
As storm Eowyn moves over NW Britain, winds as strong as Hurricane force will batter Ireland and Scotland, with storm force winds affecting many areas further south. For us, it will seem very turbulent compared to recent days but we are probably just talking about a strong force 6-7 SSW’ly wind gradually veering to a force 5-6 WSW’ly, which equates to nothing out of the ordinary for January in the Channel Islands. Ferries are bound to be affected, as are flights, on account of the conditions at their UK destinations. Weather-wise, we can expect heavy rain in the morning and then cloudy skies with patchy rain through the afternoon and evening. By the end of the night, the wind will have fallen almost calm and anyone who gets up early on Saturday, should be treated to a pretty starscape. Temperatures will peak at 10-11°C, then fall to about 6°C by the end of the night#.
Surf and the Water
Big surf… 6 feet and clean at dawn, increasing 12+ feet and choppy by dusk. Another great day for expert windsurfers too. Tides will be low around 7:45am and high around 2pm (6.8m).
The Weekend
Weather
A weekend of two halves… Saturday mostly sunny and dry, with a light force 2-3 SSW’ly breeze. Then Sunday will be rather like Friday I’m afraid, except that the intensity of the wind and rain will probably increase through the day, maintaining a strong force 7 S’ly wind through the afternoon and overnight, along with some intermittent but very heavy showers. The temperature should hover between 8 and 11°C through both days and both nights.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be mostly clean and big… around 8 feet on Saturday, gradually decreasing to 4-6 feet through Sunday. Sunday will also be very good for expert windsurfers. Tides will be low around 9:10am Saturday and at 10:15am Sunday. High tides will be in the late afternoons (6.8m and 7.3m respectively).
The next forecast update will on Friday or Saturday…
