Wednesday
Weather
The final wet day for quite a long time. And when I say wet, well it’s only partially wet... The previous days dried up by the end of morning rush hour, this day will take a little longer (probably around midday) but we should still be treated to some afternoon sunshine. The wind will be a force 4-5 SSW’ly, veering WNW’ly through the morning. Then, in the afternoon, it will maintain that direction and gradually decrease to be just light force 3 by midnight. Max temps will be around 10°C. Min temps will be about 6°C towards the back end of the night.
Surf and the Water
5-6 foot west-coast waves, clean early morning but messy from late morning onward. Reasonably good wind for windsurfers and kitesurfers. East coast all day for swimmers (but late afternoon will be nicest). Tidal movements are getting noticeably larger… low water is at 11:45am, then high will be 8.3m high at 5:50pm.
Thursday
Weather
Like every day this week the finer weather will be skewed towards the afternoon. It should be a dry day throughout though, it’s just that the morning will be rather cloudy with the slimmest chance of a shower or two. The afternoon looks firmly sunny. Winds will be light force 3 NW’ly in the morning then N’ly in the afternoon, bringing a relatively cool feed of air, so some areas might just scrape 10°C again, but most spots won’t rise above single figures. Then, during the night time, it will get down to about 4°C under mostly clear skies, so a ground frost will be likely in many places.
Surf and the Water
The wind direction is not great for the surf along on the west coast, but it should be light enough to be fairly clean, especially late afternoon... wave heights shrinking from 4-5 feet to around 3 feet. No good for windsurfing or kitesurfing on this day. Pretty good for winter swimmers though, especially down on the south coast. Tides will be low at lunchtime and high shortly before dawn and after dusk (8.9m).
Friday and The Weekend
Weather
Dry throughout, with slight variations of cloud amount and also the strength of the ENE’ly breeze. Friday, looks super sunny with just the lightest breeze (don’t miss that one), Saturday will be slightly cloudier and windier (moderate force 4 at times) but it will essentially be a lovely day to start the new month (or perhaps even season, depending how calendar-bound you are). Daily max temps will be around 9-10°C. Nightly min temps around 3-4°C, so further ground frosts are likely.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be semi-clean throughout, but it will be on the small side to begin with... 2 feet on Friday, virtually flat until mid-afternoon Saturday, but then we shall see an increase towards a decent 4-6 foot swell for Sunday. Tidal movements will be pretty huge, with highs around breakfast time 9.4m, 9.8m and 9.9m respectively. Lows will be in the early afternoons.
Next Week
Weather
Much like the weekend… dry and mostly sunny but with subtle variations in wind detail and cloud amount. The wind will always be on the light side though, sometimes even flat calm, so we will probably achieve marginally higher max temperatures even though the nights will be just as chilly. Friday currently looks like the only wet day, with some heavy showers accompanying some relatively warm air from the south. However, that’s ten days in the future, so it’s highly likely that this particular forecast detail will change.
Surf and the Water
The surf will be cleanish throughout, sometimes super-clean, sometimes a bit wobbly but fun. Wave heights will generally be between 2 and 4 feet on the west coast. Swimming conditions should be lovely on all coasts. Although slight the times will shift slightly day by day, the tides will generally be high in the mornings and low in the late afternoons. (Highs will be slightly less than 10m at the start of the week, reducing to around 7m at the end).
The next forecast update will be on Saturday…
