Wednesday and Thursday
Weather
Both days will be blighted by a frigid NNW’ly flow, which will bring frequent showers of rain or hail (perhap even a little sleet at times on Wednesday) . There will be some sunny spells though, more so on Thursday than on Wednesday, especially on Thursday afternoon, by which time the showers might be so few and far between that they all miss us. Actual temperaures will peak around 8-9°C and then fall to overnight minima of around 4°C. The wind-chill will make it all feel about 4 or 5°C cooler than reality though. The place to avoid such shivers will be down on the south coast cliff-paths, which will be especially stunning on Thursday afternoon.
Surf and the Water
Very choppy 2-3 foot surf on Wednesday and virtually flat on Thursday, maybe quite fun if you can handle the cold. For a sheltered swim, the south coast will be the only solid option. Wednesday’s Low tide will be around midday and high tide at 6pm (8.6m). Thursday’s highs will be at 6:15am and 6:30pm (8.8m and 8.6m respectively). And Thursday’s low tide will be around 12:30pm.
Friday
Weather
A lovely sunny day, with the breeze reducing from a moderate force 4 N’ly at dawn to a light force 2 NW’ly by dusk. This will feel lovely compared to the previous days, even though the air will still be cold. The visibility will be incredible, so if you finish early then a long afternoon walk will be highly recommended. Max temp about 10°C, followed by and overnight minimum of about 3-4°C with a ground frost likely in places.
Surf and the Water
Clean 1 foot waves that may be rideable on longboards and SUPs, but I wouldn’t bet on it. A lovely day for a winter swim though, especially if you wait until the afternoon. Tides will be high around 6:45am and 7pm (8.8m and 8.6m respectively). Low tide will be around 1pm.
Saturday
Weather
Fresh force 5 SSW’ly breezes will bring a gradual influx of mildness and moisture, which will mean that cloud gradually turns to patchy rain and then to drizzly mist… pretty much taking all day to go through this process. This means that there is a slim chance of some fog at the airport just before closing time. Temperatures will be up to double figures again, peaking at 12-13°C in the day time and then only just falling into single figures (about 8-9°C) in the night time.
Surf and the Water
Cleanish 1-2 foot surf on the west coast at dawn, increasing to 3 feet by dusk. There will also be some decent swimming conditions at the more sheltered southern ends of the bays. Furthermore, windsurfers and kitesurfers will find that it’s a good day to take to the water. Tides will be high (8.7m) at 7:20am and low at 1:40pm.
Sunday
With the force 5 wind changing to a WSW’ly direction, we will hang on to mild air but probably lose the bulk of the rainfall and the misty murkiness. Once again 12-13°C is the most likely max, followed by a relatively mild night, falling no lower than 8-9°C. Town will be the warmest and most comfortably sheltered area on this day.
Weather
Surf and the Water
Choppy 3-4 foot surf on the west coast, and probably some decent conditions for windsurfers and kitesurfers. As for the swimmers, then the east coast will be best by a longshot, especially Fermain. Tides will be high (8.6m) at 7:50am and low at 2:10pm.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
