Friday
Weather
A fine sunrise will give way to rapidly thickening cloud and strengthening S’ly wind through the morning (moderate force 4 increasing to strong force 6). Then, through the afternoon, the wind will escalate further to strong force 7 and the rain will unleash itself, such that by this evening the roads will already be extremely wet before the super-high tide starts to add a load of sea-water to the equation. Overnight, the wind will veer WSW’ly but remain strong and gusty, as heavy showers come and go. If you fancy going meteor spotting then Town will be lovely and sheltered but with far too much light pollution, but more secluded spots to the southeast might just afford you what are looking for. Tmeperatures will be flatlining around 11-12°C day and night, but the wind will always make it feel much cooler.
Surf and the Water
Super-clean and very powerful surf, with enough push to bring lovely waves to the north coast as well as the west. The earlier the better if you are a surfer who likes the wind to be lighter, the later the better if you are windsurfer or a kitesurfer who likes the opposite. Tides will be low at lunchtime and then about 9.5m high around 6:45pm, with the east coast suffering from overtopping almost as much as the west.
Saturday
Weather
Sunny intervals and occasional showers (some of them are likely to be on the heavy side, mainly during the morning). Winds will be WSW’ly, strong force 6 and gusty, so no real change from Friday night, except in terms of temperature, as we gradually import milder air, meaning that we hover around 12°C in the morning and 13°C in the afternoon. The next big change will be in the night time, when the wind backs to a force 4-5 S’ly and the rain falls heavily for about 4-5 hours.
Surf and the Water
Enormous choppy surf on the west coast, but cleaner and still quite sizeable up on the north (especially during the morning, when the wind won’t be quite so strong and sideways). Windsurfers and kitesurfers should certainly enjoy this one. And if you’re a sea-swimmer then you should obviously go nowhere near the west coast, but head east to Fermain and you might also be surprisingly satisfied. Tides will be 9.6m high around 7am and 9.4m around 7:30pm (obviously very messy on the west coast, but hopefully not too bad on the east). Low tide will be at lunchtime once again.
Sunday
Weather
Another exceptionally mild day, when we wake up to 13-14°C and, as such, we will probably be shrouded in mist and drizzle, likely causing some delays at the airport, and if it gets any worse in the afternoon (which is quite likely I’m afraid) then it will possibly lead to cancellations. Down on the ground though, the force 5-6 SW’ly wind will make the east coast the most sheltered and therefore the most pleasant area to hang out.
Surf and the Water
The west-coast surf will be pretty whopping again, but at only 6-8 feet it will only be about half the size of Saturday. Fingers cross that it will still be big enough for some north-caost waves, but they will certainly be a mere shadow of their former selves. The east coast should be ok for sea-swimmers once again (likewise the north coast, in the corner at Pembroke). And if you’re a windsurfer or a kitesurfer then you will probably find that the afternoon is better than the morning. Tides will be 9.6m high around 7:50am and 9.2m around 8:20pm.
Next Week
Weather
Remaining exceptionally mild but not quite as murky as Sunday. Winds will alternate between SSW’ly and WSW’ly, generally around strong force 6 (give or take a little) on Monday and Tuesday, decreasing to just force 3-4 for the rest of the week. The heaviest and most persistent rain will be on Monday night, and the rest of the week looks like an alternating sequence of clear skies and showers, with the slight chance of those showers disappearing altogether on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will typically peak around 13°C each day, and initially the nights will not be much cooler. However, in the second half of the week, with clearer skies and lighter winds, those night time temperatures could sneak down to the mid-single figures.
Surf and the Water
Windsurfers and kitesurfers should seize the first couple of days, swimmers would be best to wait for Wednesday onward. One thing’s for certain, there’s going to be plenty of surf every day, much of it very large (Tuesday being potentially classic on the north coast again). Tides will simmer down day by day, with Monday morning’s high being about 9.3m around 8:30am and Friday’s high being 7.5m at midday.
The next forecast update will most likey be on Sunday…
